'Cathedral of the Sea' is a character-driven epic which follows Arnau through the bulk of the novel, but in the end it is the sum of all its characters that makes the novel so unforgettable. Bernat’s unassuming strength, Mar’s continued adoration of Arnau, and the corrosive jealousy of Joan are just a few of the many fully realized characters that populate this novel, including minor figures such as the master’s of the various guilds and the long oppressed Jewish community. The looming presence of the cathedral throughout becomes a symbol of hope and of strife in this fully realized world which Falcones has crafted to make every character seem fully realized in their lives as they struggle to survive within the framework of history.

The ending of ‘The Bishop’s Wife’ works well on two levels. Firstly there is the plot resolution of Dudley’s mission on earth to steer the bishop back to his calling and family. He cannot remain on earth as he was sent as a means to awaken the bishop to return to his family and the people of the parish, not to replace human love. Symbolically Dudley is the embodiment of grace. He brings awake the recognition of what is truly important to people. And Dudley departs as he arrived, with the matter-of-factness of the supernatural as it is portrayed in the film being presented in a relaxed and straightforward manner with excellent performances from the cast and gentle yet effective music. Inevitability as opposed to shock is key here. The film ends on a hopeful note with the bishop having learned his lesson, marriage restored to its proper place and Dudley’s impact still felt long after he has ascended. I find this far more moving than a neat and tidy ‘fairy tale’ ending.

I don’t see this as a story about individual heroes. The real structures at play here are the system of royalty, the system of magic, and the system of prophecy. The main characters are the ones trying to tear down these systems, trying to preserve them, and trying to exploit them for their own gain. Kihrin is a wrench in the works, trying to throw a spanner into the machine. Emperor Sandus is trying to keep the whole system running at top speed no matter the cost. Relos Var is trying to build an entirely new system. Their different personalities reflect their fundamentally incompatible views on how to run the world.

It reads like a secret world has been revealed to me. Geeta’s voice is so clever, wry, observant and secret in its pain. Through Geeta I get to know Saloni, the trouble maker and loyal friend; Farah, different kinds of oppressed people and how they cope; Preity, a total shock to the system. The village, full of minor characters, is also a main character, scrutinizing the four. But as for the four of them, their slow, maddening, sometimes painful growth into friendship is the real plot. And the ‘bandit queen’ is just the framework through which they experience this growth and are tested.

Out of the ensemble of characters, Dirac is probably the most interesting to follow as a super-soldier trying to get his memories back. Sagan is also very good, he plays the down-to-earth soldier nicely who tries to hide his wounds. Boutin is an excellent bad guy that you love to hate, and Obin is so creepy in his devotion to Dirac that he upends the typical ‘alien culture’ stereotypes. And even the minor characters, like Cainen, have been written with great wit and depth.

Meeting Kate Bolte, executive producer of the post-it notes covered and frantic show about youth is like a tornado crashing into the grumpy old barn that is Clint Cantrell, Reporter for the long, grueling comics on the show that threatens to consume his tired life. Their chemistry, unsurpassed on the show or in the comics, stems from their compatibility. There is never a stale moment when Kate is pushing Clint to be his best, and he can be helping her too while relating to her on a level of loving archery and really bad life choices. The two form the ultimate duo.

I love how the series doesn’t shy away from her contradictions. One minute she’s joking around with her crew, the next she’s coldly calculating how to outmaneuver rivals. The anime digs into her backstory just enough to keep you hooked but leaves plenty of mystery. It’s rare to see a female lead in this kind of role, and her unpredictability keeps every mission tense. By the end, you’re left wondering if she’s a genius, a madwoman, or both.

I absolutely adore 'Christy'—it's one of those stories that feels like a warm hug every time I revisit it. The protagonist, Christy Huddleston, is this bright-eyed 19-year-old who leaves her comfortable life to teach at a mission school in the Smoky Mountains. The brooding, compassionate physician who adds so much tension and depth to the narrative. The way these characters interact—especially Christy's struggles with faith, love, and purpose—makes the book impossible to put down. Other standout characters include Fairlight Spencer, a local woman whose friendship teaches Christy about resilience, and the mischievous yet endearing children at the school. The novel's strength lies in how real they all feel—like people you might've known in another life. Catherine Marshall's writing makes their joys and sorrows leap off the page. I still tear up thinking about some of their arcs!

The father is a very dominant character in the family and every one is scared of his authority. But there is a crack in his strong façade. The mother is very strong character but she hides her strength behind her submission to her husband. The children are also very unique. The oldest one is trying to please his father, the middle one is rebelling, and the youngest one is absorbing everything. It is very interesting to see how these characters interact with each other and discover their secrets and their struggles. The story also includes relatives of the family members who add to the pressure or give a different perspective to the characters and the story.
