As a Ninjago fan rewatching from season 1, I’m mapping out Kai's age progression timeline to understand his character growth across the series.

In the main Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu series, Kai’s age remains relatively static from season to season. According to the show’s timeline, he’s somewhere between 16-17 years old in the early seasons of the show before steadily increasing in age through the later story arcs. Note that Ninjago is more of an event-driven story than a yearly age-based one, however. I recently started reading a web novel called ‘My Secret, My Bully, My Mates. Series’. The story follows the life of a protagonist as he deals with three of the central characters in his life hiding secrets from each other. The way the secrets mix with the characters’ personal histories makes for some very tense scenarios.

I found a pretty in depth timeline of fan made content that was trying to link together seasons, specials and shorts. From what I understand of how the series begins, the main character Kai is a 15 year old ‘teen ninja’ when we first meet him. Then about 2 years pass and he is now 17 for the Digiverse and Tournament storylines that follow the Skybound adventure. From there another year or so passes and he is now 18 or 19 years old for the movie which then acts as another time jump of about a year, so he is now 20-ish for the Sons of Garmadon storyline. The Oni invasion and his search for the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu would then likely take another 2 years or so to complete bringing Kai to 22-23 years old by the end of the story. It is all pretty speculative but the way it all lines up is cool and creates a good narrative arc for Kai’s journey as he grows up.

You can really sense the time passage in this show. In the beginning of the series Kai is a young boy scared of his new reality. By the final battle however he is a veteran, old before his time. Young people aren’t veterans, they are too green. They have seen too much. This is how an old veteran would speak of past villains, how he would train new heroes to face the ultimate battle and how he would reference all the battles that have occurred before in order to prepare for future ones. Taking into account that each season is only a few months long and there are fifteen of them plus specials, mini-series and even inter-series time-frame passages, I think by the end of the series Kai must be in his mid-twenties at least. The show has a very light atmosphere, but there is plenty of subtext.

Season 6: around 18 years old. Seasons 7–9: 18 years old. Seasons 10–13: 18–19 years old. Seasons after that: around 19–20 years old. Note that The LEGO Ninjago Movie is in its own continuity, so his age there is not to be counted towards the TV series. When compiling a fan-made timeline of the series, it's a good idea to note the ends of the biggest story arcs (like the Oni War or a time-travel story), as it is reasonable to add a year or so to his age in these instances.

Does anyone have access to the ‘Legacy’ shorts and the ‘Decoded’ episodes? Those often have flashbacks or even comments on the meta level to fix the time frame. ‘Five years ago’ would suffice for a timeline reference for an event from Season 1 that’s mentioned in a Season 10 short. I haven’t done a deep rewatch of those for this goal, but that type of information is hidden in the writers’ throwaway lines. Maybe someone already found the answer in one of those extra episodes.

So I’ve been rewatching episodes and making timelines for fandoms and generally looking up everything Lego related and according to Lego, Kai is a teenager when we first meet him, he is 16 years old. After that, there aren’t really any birthdays handed out by the writers and so we use our own reasoning for his age based on in-story time jumps and such, and also lots of headcanon.

A rounded estimate of Kai's age throughout the series would be: Season 1 (Rise of the Spinjitzu) — ~16. Season 2 — ~16. Season 3 (Rebooted) — ~16–17 (allowing for some tech/time jumping and some growth in his character). Season 4 — ~17. Season 5 — ~17. Season 6 — ~17–18. Season 7 — ~18. Season 8 — ~18. Season 9 — ~18. Season 10 — ~18–19. Season 11 — ~19. Season 12 — ~19. Season 13 — ~19. Season 14 — ~19–20. Newer episodes (and even some specials) place Kai in his late teens to very early twenties most of the time.

I really love how his ambiguity is so easy to adapt into your own stories. And if you want, I can organize this all into a neat little chart for the seasons, along with their corresponding episode numbers, and compare/contrast Kai’s age with the other Ninja. Let me know if you’d like!

I love this discussion. So much passion has gone into these characters. We want to believe their journey was as long as it was hard. Whether or not Finn was 24 or 27 when he became so mastery-brilliant is not really the point to me. The point is he worked hard to get there. That’s what makes his journey so fulfilling. And that number just helps us understand how hard he worked and thus how fulfilling his journey was.

For voice cues, I only focused on how high his voice sounds in relation to how often it ‘cracks’ in emotions (i.e. how ‘shouty’ he sounds). For better or for worse, the voice actor, Vincent Tong, like many voice actors, grows up naturally over a decade and consequently ‘matures’ (i.e. ‘refines’) his role in a significant way. To signal Kai’s growth, however, the directors probably built upon that change in voice instead of fighting against it, and I encourage you to listen for this change too. The boyish, passionate ‘fire’ of the 1st season grows up to become a more controlled, (very) formidable ‘fire’ in the 15th season.

Do you know how old Nya is? Her age in relation to Kai gives us a starting point to figure this out. Since she is his sister and therefore likely to be about a year or two younger than Kai in most scenarios, her depicted age and abilities will reveal her to not be a little kid. Early on in the series, for example, Nya is depicted as a teenage genius, perhaps 14-15 or so. Therefore, based on these early scenarios, Kai would be about 16-17. However, in “Crystalized” (Book 5, Water), when Nya becomes the new Sea Empress, she contains the wisdom of the previous master, which places her at a mid-20s maturity. Therefore, if Nya is 24-25 in this scenario, that would make Kai 25-27 years old in this scenario as well. For the entire series though, Nya is depicted to be Kai’s younger sister, and therefore he protects her in all situations.
