This brings us to the economics of attention. We can say that, for fan translators, kudos, comments and donations are currency. When translating a well-known work with an existing audience, there’s a much better chance of receiving these ‘rewards’ for one’s labor. However, translating an unknown, untapped novel is a complete gamble. Will people even be interested in reading it? And if they do read it, will they even care? ‘Absolute Hypnosis’ manga acts as an advertisement for the novel. But as it stands now, there is already ample entertainment in the form of the manga itself, for its existing audience. Thus in perceiving that demand is not sufficient to trigger supply of novel in this case, there is a classic market failure in the fandom’s ecosystem.

I recently finished reading the first four volumes of Shimano Kuma Inaba's recent novel series ‘Inaba no Lions’ and was struck by how meticulously the author must have detailed out the Labyrinth mechanics. Stat increases, the various possible abilities to unlock, and the combos of skills have to be translated in such a way that they read naturally and make sense to a gamer who has not read the original Japanese novel. It's clearly a major part of a translator’s job to get this right. A huge amount of work and reason why official releases of novels take so long to come out, as well as demonstrating respect for the team at J-Novel Club who are doing this hard work for us fans. Even when buying the legal version, you're also paying for the detailed work to ensure the core game mechanics translate correctly.

This is a light novel series. It is seriously wonderful. Unlike most other fantasy stories it is totally sincere. It does not wink at the reader. It does not parody the genre. It is simply presented as fantasy. The light novel is told from the same pragmatic, goal-oriented perspective as the protagonist. It can sometimes feel rather unemotional or even cold, but that is part of its ingenuity. The relationships in the light novel are almost always developed through transactions or by working towards a common goal. Emotions slowly develop from there, and it can be rather glacial. The anime had to speed that up, by adding lots of emotion and lots of fan service. But the light novel’s methodical and glacial development is what is most notable and defining of the story itself.

As I started reading the first chapter of Ch. 1, the art evolved nicely throughout the chapters, especially in the latter ones. Detailed backgrounds, improved panel compositions and smoother character movements were some of the notable improvements. I especially liked how the artist of Ch. 1 grew into the larger-than-life battles that required epic movements and stances. Moreover, an improved character pose, once stiff, became dynamic and fluid. The detailed and cinematic art really added a lot of value to the storytelling and enhanced the impact of key plot points greatly. If an adaptation were to be made to this manhwa, I think it would actually be better than the source material in terms of sheer spectacle.

I searched for the original Korean title of the novel plus the word “translation”. This led me to a rather haphazardly compiled (and not completed) free translation of the novel that was posted on a forum by someone who clearly cared about the work. As with most free efforts of this nature, there is a risk that the work is not up to par, but it is also possible to stumble upon someone who is regularly updating the work.

Just reading the recommendations. This term “projection novel” is new to me, but I do like BL+sci-fi/fantasy. Following this thread for ideas.

Be aware that some of these “free” reading sites are very malicious. My friend recently got a nasty browser hijacker from one of these sites. It was a pain to clean up from, and it had a lot of pop-unders, fake download buttons, and even some redirects to phishing pages.
This means you must use private browsing, and even then be extremely careful – better open up a special browser which you only use for these shady websites and never log into online banking, shop etc. Even with a repulsive ad blocker like uBlock Origin, reading on these “free” websites is simply too risky for me.
It’s worth the few coins to support the digital book industry and download a high-quality reading app for your mobile device. The cost of an app is a small price to pay for the peace of mind and protection of your device and self.

I'm just imagining the pitch meeting for a light novel version of this. "It’s a guy who gets sent to another world. His goal is to…build a harem of older women". *cricket sounds*. Right. Web novel? Sure. Free to write. Light novel? That’s got a business case behind it. So no, I’d count on my hands how many such light novels actually exist, and assuming they keep making more would be silly. The web is where this particular brand of fantasy lives rent-free.

From my daily commute reading of your novel I have noted the following key points. First, there are multiple female leads each with good background development and distinct abilities. Each of the female leads develops a strong personal loyalty to the male lead (MC) beyond simple alliance. The MC is by turns dense and blind, and then willfully avoiding a commitment to any one woman in order to keep all of his options open. Other male characters react to the MC’s various relationships with the females in the story with a mix of envy and suspicion.
Harem checklist: done. Novel keeps to the settings, backstories, and powers of multiple female leads, each of them developing into strong personal allies of the male protagonist, whereas he remains in the dark about his feelings towards them and refuses to close any doors. Other male characters then comment on their loser status in relation to the protagonist’s relationship with the female leads. For purposes of putting a novel like this on your reading list, it’s a harem – 99% of ongoing harem series lack a romantic conclusion.

I’m waiting for an audio book version of this to be released in English. Apparently, there is a full Korean audio book version out now. No doubt the English publisher will commission a translation and a reading of this once the text version has been completed. I only read on my commute, so everything I read is in audio book form. I check Audible and the other major audio book platforms from time to time to see if this has been released yet. It hasn’t. A very fun story to be read well by a good narrator in audio book format, so fingers crossed that it will get a full English audio book version.
