It's fascinating how passionate people get about the order of what are essentially disposable pulp novels. I mean that in a good way! They're so good they make us want to optimize the experience. But maybe the optimization is the enemy of enjoyment. Just read one.

Is there a romantic subplot that carries over? Or a major villain that returns? If not, I'd just read the blurbs and pick whichever setting sounds cool—the small town, the desert, the city. Life's too short for rigid reading lists when it comes to thrillers like these.

They're comfort food. You don't eat your veggies in a specific order.

I read 'The Affair' first, which is a prequel set during his Military Police days. It was cool to see him in a slightly more structured environment. Then when I jumped to 'Killing Floor,' seeing him as the ultimate drifter had more impact. So starting with a prequel can work as a contrast, not a prelude.

Honestly, you can grab almost any Reacher book and have a complete story. They're designed as standalones. I started with '61 Hours' because it was on a sale table and had zero trouble. After that, I just read whatever the library had available. If you get obsessed, you can always go back and fill in the gaps later.

Trying to be strict about order might just delay the fun. The appeal is in the consistent formula and character, not a sprawling series arc.
