Consider the format. The first two novels are often bundled cheaply as an omnibus in paperback or ebook. That's the most economical start. Then, if you're hooked, you buy the next two, then the Heresy book. Let your wallet guide you as much as the lore!

I started with the Horus Heresy series, so I encountered 'Fear to Tread' in that sequence. Years later, I read the 40K Blood Angels books. It was like visiting the sad, decayed future of a glorious civilization I'd already seen fall. A uniquely poignant experience. So if you're a Heresy fan first, that order is perfectly valid and emotionally powerful.

My local Warhammer store manager said to just read the Blood Angels books in numbered order (they're usually numbered on the cover) and treat the rest as bonus content. It was simple advice that worked perfectly for me. Not everything needs a complex chart.

Yes! The 'Blood Angels Omnibus' collects the first two novels, 'Deus Encarmine' and 'Deus Sanguinius'. Unfortunately, 'Red Fury' and 'Black Tide' haven't been collected into a second omnibus yet, so you'd have to get those separately. It's a bit annoying, but at least the initial duology is together. The omnibus is often the cheapest and simplest way to start.

How do I read James Swallow’s Horus Heresy novels in order?

3 Answers2026-07-25 02:01:13
The beauty of a series this size is that there's no wrong way, only slower ways. Want to binge all the Siege of Terra books in one go? You'll be confused, but you do you. My path was chaotic—I started with 'Betrayer' because the cover looked cool. Was I lost? Yes. Did it hook me anyway? Also yes. Sometimes confusion is a compelling mystery.

Is there a recommended reading order for James Swallow’s Star Trek books?

Lurking this thread because I've got 'The Poisoned Chalice' sitting on my nightstand. Guess I need to read three other books first? Sigh. The perils of shared universe fiction.

How are James Swallow’s Mass Effect tie-in novels ordered in the series?

Honestly, I think the fandom sometimes overcomplicates this. James Swallow wrote two books. Read 'Mass Effect: Revelation' before 'Mass Effect: Ascension'. That's it. They're not a sprawling epic. They're supplementary material. If you enjoy the universe, you'll probably enjoy these. If you don't, the order won't save them. The end.

What are the best Warhammer 40k book series to read first?

Stepping into the Warhammer 40k universe can feel like entering an expansive, bombastic tapestry of lore and legend. A personal favorite to kick things off is the 'Horus Heresy' series. It’s an absolute must-read for newcomers since it sets the stage for everything that follows in this chaotic universe. The crazy part is that it delves into the split within the Imperium with such depth that you really start to feel the weight of betrayal and the longing for a lost golden age. I was blown away by how emotional some of the character arcs are! If you want to dive deeper, 'Gaunt’s Ghosts' by Dan Abnett offers a more grounded perspective on the Imperial Guard. The camaraderie and struggles of this ragtag group of soldiers caught in the universe's wars provide a nice balance to the grandiose themes of the Heresy. Plus, the characters are incredibly relatable, which makes the action hit harder! Lastly, do check out 'Eisenhorn'. This trilogy brilliantly weaves mystery with the grimdark themes that the setting is famous for, allowing you to explore the universe from the perspective of an Inquisitor. The balance of intrigue and action really keeps the pages turning, and it’s a wonderful jumping-off point for discovering new facets of the lore. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Where can I find a complete list of James Swallow books in order by series?

I just go to the source. The 'Marc Dane' series order is right on the copyright page of the books. For the others, I look at the publisher. Black Library's website lets you browse by author and series. Big Finish has a store page for each writer. It's a bit more manual, going to three or four different sites, but you get the official data straight from the people who published it. No middleman, no outdated info.

Where to read Harlequin Warhammer 40k novels for free?

I totally get the urge to dive into the Harlequin novels without breaking the bank. While I respect the creators and recommend supporting them by purchasing official copies when possible, there are some legit ways to explore these stories for free. Many local libraries have partnerships with digital platforms like OverDrive or Libby where you can borrow e-books, including Warhammer titles. Some fan communities also share excerpts or older editions legally as part of promotional campaigns. Just be cautious of sketchy sites offering full novels—they’re often piracy hubs that hurt the authors we love. If you’re patient, keep an eye out for Humble Bundle deals or Black Library’s occasional free short story giveaways.

Can I pre-order Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2?

4 Answers2026-07-01 16:04:45
The hype for 'Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2' is absolutely real, and I’ve been tracking every bit of news like a tech-priest decoding ancient STCs. From what I’ve gathered, pre-orders are indeed live across most major platforms—Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Marketplace. The collector’s edition even includes a physical figurine of Titus, which looks like it could double as a makeshift melee weapon in a pinch. What’s wild is how the community’s buzzing about whether this sequel will capture the same visceral combat as the original. I replayed the first game last month just to compare, and the nostalgia hit hard. If you’re on the fence, maybe check out some gameplay trailers; the Tyranid swarms look terrifyingly awesome. Personally, I’m grabbing it day one—chainsaw sword included.

What order should I read the Horus Heresy books in?

5 Answers2026-06-08 00:18:16
The Horus Heresy series is a beast—over 50 novels! If you're new, I'd say start with the first five books: 'Horus Rising', 'False Gods', 'Galaxy in Flames', 'The Flight of the Eisenstein', and 'Fulgrim'. These lay the groundwork for the entire saga, introducing the key players and the betrayal that shakes the galaxy. After that, you can branch out based on which Legions or characters intrigue you. Personally, I jumped into 'The First Heretic' early because I adore the Word Bearers, and it gave me a deeper understanding of their fall. Some books like 'Legion' or 'Know No Fear' stand alone well, while others tie tightly into arcs. The anthologies are fun but best saved for later. Just don't feel pressured to read in strict order—follow your hype!
