From a fanfic perspective, the 'One Piece' fan novel 'This Bites!' does an incredible job expanding the horror of the Calm Belt and the Florian Triangle. It treats the sea as an actively malicious force with a will, where ghost ships are prisons for souls.
Fanfiction often explores horror elements the original shies from. This one turns the Grand Line into a true nightmare of legends, with the crew constantly on edge from phenomena that defy logic. It’s surprisingly well-written.
For a manga take, 'One Piece' has the Thriller Bark arc, which is literally a ghost ship saga with zombies, a vampire-themed Warlord, and shadows stolen by a devil fruit user. The entire sea around it is shrouded in perpetual fog, hiding the haunted island.
It’s goofy on the surface, but the concepts—like a pirate whose power is to manipulate souls and build an army of the dead—are pretty dark when you think about it. The ocean in that world has pockets of pure supernatural terror.
Has anyone brought up 'The Light Between Oceans'? Not fantasy, but the moral haunting is intense. A lighthouse keeper and his wife raise a baby from a washed-up boat, and the ocean brings the consequences.
The sea here is a conveyor of fate, delivering both miracle and tragedy. It’s haunted by the ghost of a choice, the weight of a secret carried across the waves. For a non-genre take on how the ocean can be a spectral force in human lives, it’s powerful.

This author once failed as a heroine… and returned as something entirely different.
Not as a savior.
But as the villain.
And she didn’t come back empty-handed.
She brought secrets.
She brought sins.
She brought a story that was never meant to be read.
Sinners & Saints is not just a collection of dark romance stories—
It is a confession.
A warning.
And a door best left unopened.
Within these pages lie twisted love stories where desire and destruction walk hand in hand, and every choice comes with a cost.
So the question is simple:
Will you turn away…
or step inside anyway?
She's a princess destined for a prince, but her heart yearns for the sea. Her voyage was only supposed to clear her mind and prepare her for marriage, but when her ship is boarded by pirates she finds herself face to face with a new purpose. The notorious Captain Gino and his crew have a reason for kidnapping her, but does she have what it takes to save her kingdom and everyone she loves? Will marrying Prince Sade be everything she needs in life, or will her infatuation with Gino be more than she can bear? With love and war on the line, how far will she go?
Merida was a certified black sheep of the family. She loves to hear her grandmother's story about fairies, dragons, pirates and princesses and her favorite was the tale about the legendary pirate named Escarial, and a Princess called Athalia.
Listening to her grandma’s folktales was her routine all throughout her eighteen years of existence. That’s why when her grandmother died without having at least a last talk with her, she turned badly depressed. She didn’t go to school at all, and just stayed in her grandmother’s room to lock herself away from the rest of the world.
Three days after her grandmother’s funeral, strange things happened in her room. The painting her old woman often gazed on suddenly moved and glowed. She succumbed to it, helpless, and had nothing to do to save herself because of the force that was beyond overwhelming. The next thing she knew, she was in North Sonnenfield. What’s more shocking to her was the name she’s called as by her servants; Princess Athalia—the heir of the throne, and the only daughter of King Eldar of North Sonnenfield.
She was in awe, because she remembered that King Eldar was the character in the story. The palace where she found herself lost was the same place where the brave princess who ventured the dangerous sea had lived.
She loves being in a Sonnenfield. However, she knew to herself that the day will come when she would wake up from a dream.
But life always has a twist because Captain Escarial came to the scene. She expects that he will be gentleman just like pirate captain in the book. But to her horror, this Captain Escarial is snobbish, rude and proud.
Oh, how she hates him!
Queen Asteria, the first siren has always hated the humans after what happened to her 5,000 years ago. But now her hate is also directed at the shifters she once called family. Asteria was betrayed by those she held dear, captured by the humans and forced to make a deal all to save the shifters from extinction. Will Asteria’s need for revenge cost her everything? Will she give in to her mate-bond with the last descendant of the royal Lycan Bloodline? Or will she be forced to live a life she despised? For the seas are soulless and so is she.
The 'Founders' trilogy by Robert Jackson Bennett (starts with 'Foundryside') is all about cursed treasure. The 'treasure' is magical artifacts called scrived objects that rewrite reality, but using them attracts the attention of a sentient, reality-altering entity that wants to consume the world. The curse is the attention of a god.
The adventure is a heist story that turns into a fight for survival against the very laws of physics.
