The Po of Kung Fu Panda is an wonderful example of a underdog character, and how he grows throughout the three Kung Fu Panda films is basically a masterclass in writing such a character. At first, a fish-out-of-water story, a cute panda wants to practice kung fu, but when he finds a kung fu school, he learns that he is not very good at it, and is only named the Dragon Warrior because he is the only one left. And even after that, he wonders for a long time whether he really is cut out to be a kung fu fighter. But in order to find out, he has to stop trying to be as good as his fellow students, the Stick Figure Like Tigress and Monkey, and learn to rely on his own unique brand of kung fu, which includes his many positive qualities: His resilience, creativity and yes, his love of eating. The famous dumpling scene with Shifu is the point where his greatest weakness becomes his greatest strength.

By the end of the trilogy Po has not only mastered the physical skills of kung fu but is also emotionally intelligent. He treats Kai with respect and can understand that the fight for power is empty – he has been there and knows how disappointing it is. This Po is completely different from the Newbie from the first movie but still the same lovable Po, now with even more self-assurance. The big fan has found his place in the Kung Fu world and can even show off his skills in all his geeky glory.

One of the most powerful transformation stories in animation is Po’s in Kung Fu Panda. As a huge fan of the Furious Five when first introduced, Po sees himself as little more than a fan boy of kung fu, unable to really believe that he too could be a kung fu master. But all that changes as he begins to work his way through kung fu training, failing (epically) over and over again, only to eventually come to terms with who he is as a kung fu master. His journey to self-acceptance and ultimate mastery of kung fu (all the way to teaching others to find their inner weirdness, a task which he comes to in the third film with the help of a now-mellow Shifu) is nothing short of wonderful. My favorite is when he discovers the Dragon Scroll only to find it empty. What does that mean? In a world full of trick and magic that will grant ultimate power to the one who finds it, it must mean that true power comes from elsewhere. It does, and his subsequent journey as the master of kung fu, in all his unique, noodle-loving panda-ness is absolutely delightful.

This is also why I love Po so much because he never changes from who he is. He is a big, goofy panda, but he becomes confident in who he is as a warrior. Using his noodle shop and skills from his parents in fighting is so cool because he found a way to make kung fu work for him, not the other way around. I love how in the final fight with Kai, he uses Kai’s power against him. That was the greatest weapon of all time – Po’s authentic self.

The protagonist Po, of the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ trilogy, grows as a characters in a completely fulfilling way throughout the films. At first glance his development appears typical in the sense of a zero to hero character, but it is surprising and great in its actual realization. After he first tries to emulate the techniques of the Furious Five and fails miserably in doing so, he develops a style of Kung Fu that makes use of his body. For instance, his rolls become a sort of powerful weapon, by using his belly to propel himself in different directions. This is an excellent metaphor for growth in which one cannot be forced into another’s mold and has to develop in his own way.

This character growth continues into the 3rd installment. The emotional growth Po goes through in KFP2, after discovering the truth about his parents, is fantastic as well. How he comes to terms with his past in the end is almost too emotional to handle. He declares, “I don’t need to know who I was, because I know who I am” – a moment that always makes me tear up. And in the 3rd installment, we see that Po has grown not only into a secure hero of his own, but into a leader who tries to bring out the best in others. He trains a large group of pandas to defend the Valley, using their unique quirks against them. He uses their love of snacks for motivation in a fight. It’s clear that the former student who required dumplings for training rewards has come a long way.
