Who Are The Protagonists In When The Alpha King Chose Me?

I was further drawn into this story because of the very dynamic and addicting relationship between the two main characters in this story. We get to follow a clever, stubborn, but very very powerful heroine who is trying to make the best of her life when she is forced to live under a crown. Along side her is the powerful, but very complex and easily hurt Alpha King who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. He is absolute power and control, but we also get glimpses of his struggling and vulnerable side to the King.

As for a plot summary, the protagonist of the book learns power and tries to negotiate for her autonomy in a system that wants to stomp on her. The Alpha King is struggling to reconcile his duty to his kingdom and crown with his growing vulnerability. We get to see the King through court gossip, royal decrees, and even some personal moments of quiet vulnerability that go against his typical image as a cold, hard monarch. The secondary characters get to have their say for chapters at a time, and we see multiple layers of the protagonist and Alpha King through their various storylines. The main couple plus various rotating POVs allow for a real look at the consequences of actions instead of just a romance.

It is refreshing to read about two protagonists who are not perfect. They have agency and make mistakes, but overall, they grow as people throughout the story. Their chemistry is also great, as much of their interactions are based in conflict and negotiation, which makes their attraction to each other all the more believable. I loved both of the protagonists and their individual journeys, which is why this book is going to linger with me for a while.

I’m totally in love with this story! The heroes are our usual ‘chosen woman’ and the Alpha King. The heroine is a tough, intelligent and fast thinking girl who finds herself in some absolutely impossible situations time and time again, whilst the King is an imposing, complicated figure who exudes power and authority, but also has a soft underbelly that we get to see. Reading their scenes is like watching two different worlds crash into each other – their royal world and the personal world that they both secretly yearn for.

I loved so much how the secondary characters actually got to share the spotlight with the main characters at times, so that the two leads were never isolated in their dramatic situations. Moments where the heroine talked to her friend(s) or the King talked to his loyal aide(s) added even more depth and realism to the two leads. All in all, ‘When the Alpha King Chose Me’ is a wonderful, tense and warm read, and I still get all smiley from remembering some of the authors’ most awkward but honest conversations between the two protagonists.

I have to sing the leads for ‘When the Alpha King Chose Me’. The heroine is a strong willed woman who gets swept up in the royal life by chance and becomes the King’s companion for reasons of his own. The Alpha King is a powerful, brooding man who rules with an iron fist and often is impenetrable, but there is a lot going on beneath his closed off exterior. The reader sees how the heroine’s and the King’s lives change when they are forced to deal with the demands of their duty, the politics of the palace, and the growing attraction they feel for each other.

In addition to the two leads, the novel has a small, but highly developed cast of supporting characters, many of whom could easily be the leads in their own novel. There’s the heroine’s childhood friend, who remains one of her closest and most honest friends; the stern palace advisor who makes a lot of the royal politics decision, but is not beyond having his own emotions and loyalties manipulated; and the King’s loyal guard, whose POV scenes provide a unique perspective on many of the events of the novel. As a whole, the supporting cast adds depth to the leads and turns what could have been a rather standard power-romance novel into a full-throated, three-dimensional court drama about identity, consent, and survival.

In short, the central figures of ‘When the Alpha King Chose Me’ are the chosen woman and the Alpha King. And they are enhanced by a small but equally well-developed cast of additional figures: the King’s childhood friend of the heroine; the King’s stern and sometimes menacing court advisor; and the King’s loyal guard. The interplay of their figures and the chemistry between the two protagonists, and the shifting loyalties of those around them, kept me up way too late at night as I devoured each subsequent section. I still think fondly of one particularly rousing throne-room scene.
