In What Publication Order Were The Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House Books Released?
As a new fan collecting the 'Little House on the Prairie' series, I need the original release dates to read them chronologically by publication.

Okay, listing them out: 1. Little House in the Big Woods (1932). 2. Farmer Boy (1933). 3. Little House on the Prairie (1935). 4. On the Banks of Plum Creek (1937). 5. By the Shores of Silver Lake (1939). 6. The Long Winter (1940). 7. Little Town on the Prairie (1941). 8. These Happy Golden Years (1943).
Addendum: The First Four Years (1971). That's the full publication chronology. Any other ordering is a modern editorial decision for readability or chronological flow.

This is a classic example of internal chronology vs. release order. For publication: Start with 'Little House in the Big Woods' (1932). Then 'Farmer Boy' (1933), which is a standalone about Almanzo. Back to Laura with 'Little House on the Prairie' (1935), 'On the Banks of Plum Creek' (1937), 'By the Shores of Silver Lake' (1939), 'The Long Winter' (1940), 'Little Town on the Prairie' (1941), and 'These Happy Golden Years' (1943).
The posthumous 'The First Four Years' (1971) rounds it out. I'd argue reading in story order is better for first-timers, but publication order has its own historical charm.

Most bookstores and libraries now shelve them in story chronological order, which is different! The publishing timeline is a neat slice of history itself. 'Little House in the Big Woods' debuted in 1932 during the Depression. It was successful enough that 'Farmer Boy' followed in 1933, then the iconic 'Little House on the Prairie' in 1935.
The series continued steadily through the late '30s and early '40s, with the last one published in her lifetime being 'These Happy Golden Years' in 1943. I find it interesting that she wrote about her childhood while the world was at war. The final, darker manuscript, 'The First Four Years', didn't see print until 1971, long after her passing.

I think a lot of us memorized this from the copyright pages in the old paperback editions. The sequence is: 'Little House in the Big Woods' (1932), 'Farmer Boy' (1933), 'Little House on the Prairie' (1935), 'On the Banks of Plum Creek' (1937), 'By the Shores of Silver Lake' (1939), 'The Long Winter' (1940), 'Little Town on the Prairie' (1941), 'These Happy Golden Years' (1943).
'The First Four Years' came much later, in 1971. It's worth noting that the last few published during WWII have a certain resilience in their tone that might reflect the era.

I recall this from writing a paper in school. The publication timeline is a neat piece of literary history. 'Little House in the Big Woods' kicked it off in 1932. 'Farmer Boy' followed in 1933. After a two-year gap, 'Little House on the Prairie' arrived in 1935. Then a fairly regular two-year pattern: 'On the Banks of Plum Creek' (1937), 'By the Shores of Silver Lake' (1939).
The pace quickened at the end: 'The Long Winter' (1940), 'Little Town on the Prairie' (1941), and 'These Happy Golden Years' (1943). The long-awaited (and darker) 'The First Four Years' came out in 1971.

"At seventeen, Lizzie Thornton left her hometown of Fair Haven to pursue her musical dreams—and to run from Trent Younger, the boy who broke her heart.
Now a successful singer, Lizzie returns to Fair Haven nine years later. When she runs into Trent at her brother’s wedding, she discovers he’s no longer the shy boy she left behind. He’s a sexy, confident man who knows what he wants—and what he wants is her.
When a night of passion results in unexpected consequences, Lizzie must grapple with prior heartbreak and with accepting that she still loves the one man she could never forget.
Trent Younger grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, and he fought tooth and nail to establish himself as one of the most successful restaurateurs in Fair Haven. Yet he’s never forgotten Lizzie Thornton, the girl he adored, the same girl who left him to pick up the pieces of his life after tragedy struck them both.
As Trent uncovers the layers of Lizzie’s guarded heart, he realizes that he doesn’t just want her in his bed. He wants her in his life—forever.
Yet even as love rekindles, their pasts threaten to drive them apart. Unless they confront their demons, Lizzie and Trent may jeopardize a love that has already withstood the test of time."
My mom read them to me in chronological order when I was a kid, and it felt like growing up alongside Laura. That progression from the cozy, insulated world of the Big Woods to the harsh realities of the Dakota prairie winter in 'The Long Winter' was incredibly powerful. You really feel the family's resilience build book by book. The jump from the youthful adventures to the more sober responsibilities in 'These Happy Golden Years' and then into 'The First Four Years' honestly feels like a natural, if difficult, transition into adulthood.
