Is A Radioactive Spider Bite Deadly To Humans?

Spider-Man's origin left me wondering if most fictional radioactive animal bites guarantee superpowers or realistically cause fatal radiation sickness in humans.

Yes. In most cases, the amount of radiation that would be required to give a spider any sort of property would kill both the spider and the human it bit. This is why this idea is so much fun in fiction. It allows for a special case, a story that would otherwise be simply too deadly to be interesting. For a look at a more realistic and terrifying take on the transformative bite, try ‘Bite’. Unlike the fantastical, super-powered creature of the above idea, this book’s focus is on the horrible, devouring degradation of the human body, and the lonely, isolating horror that such a change would bring to a person’s life.

At high levels, radiation is very, very bad for humans. If a radioactive spider were to bite you, for example, you could expect the bite to deliver a stream of ionizing radiation straight into your veins. Depending on the type of radiation delivered, this could cause acute radiation sickness (nausea, vomiting, skin burns, etc.), followed by potential organ failure. And remember that the spider’s venom would likely be completely and totally unpredictable as well.

No, I don’t think it would be instantly fatal. Although it would depend on the level of radiation in the spider bite, it is possible that the person could develop cancer or have other illness long after the spider bite. It would make an excellent comic book plot however. That’s why they use it in comics. In real life, however, I wouldn’t wish to test it out. I’ll stick to watching Spider-Man swing from the webs of his building, no radioactive spider bites for me, thank you very much!

For the sake of this post, let’s look at the purely fictional scenario of radioactive spider bites. While most spiders are harmless to humans and do not carry radiation, it is theoretically possible that a spider could bite someone and transfer radioactive material if it had come into contact with something radioactive, for example in a lab, or had flown near a nuclear accident. However, the biggest concern would be the type of radioactive isotopes it had come into contact with. An alpha emitter, for example, would not travel very far through skin and would be stopped by the outer layers of the dermis, meaning the worst that would happen is localized damage to the spider-bitten area, depending on the dosage. An ingested or injected alpha emitter, on the other hand, is a different story entirely, causing serious damage to any tissue it comes into contact with along the way, and potentially causing extreme poisoning as it makes its way through the body. And if we mix radiation with a spider’s venom… Well, who knows? It would likely have unpredictable, possibly extremely toxic effects on the human in question. And, yes, it would take a long time to recover from. But hey, in the world of comic books, we like to imagine that Peter Parker just spends a few weeks in chemo and then he’s good to go again.

This can also be viewed from the perspective of the spider. The spider was Mutated by the radiation, given a temporary abnormality of life. The spider's 'last act' was to transfer this abnormality to another creature. The spider's bite is not a poisonous injection, but rather a transfer of something - just as a bee's sting is a transfer of the bee's body in honey form that the bee uses for food in later life. It is fatal to the spider, but in the body of the creature that is bitten by it, it can be fatal or not depending on the creature's compatibility with the transferred material. Most creatures would have a severe, possibly fatal, reaction to the transfer of the spider's mutated body material. But Peter Parker's body is uniquely compatible with it. So, rather than being poisonous, the material is grafted to Peter in a very unusual but symbiotic manner. It is not an envenomation.

So many “what if” scenarios run through my head when thinking about Spider-Man. What if Aunt May had been bitten? What if Flash Thompson had been bitten? Peter is uniquely suited to be Spider-Man. Is it because of his age? His genetics? His innocence and morally flexible nature prior to the responsibility lesson? If the bite is deadly for everyone bitten, then Peter’s survival of the bite would be mere luck. But if the bite is somehow selectively mutagenic and only switches on in certain people, then it makes sense that he had the right “key” in his DNA to become Spider-Man. That would make his survival of the bite and subsequent actions as Spider-Man a sense of destiny rather than a random accident. And it makes the power’s lethality for others so much more meaningful in that it reinforces the sense that his power was meant for him alone.
