I remembered that this book was really fast-paced when I first read it. I think it has 50 chapters but for some reason they are all really short. It is almost like a mini-cliffhanger at the end of each chapter. It really makes you want to keep reading.

‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar is one of my favourite books, which I have re-read on many occasions. The book consists of 50 short and punchy chapters, written in such a way that the reader is able to complete each chapter and then return to it later. The connections between Stanley’s present situation and the history of Camp Green Lake are slowly revealed throughout the book, and the way in which Sachar has constructed the story is excellent. I found myself not wanting to put the book down as I was eager to find out what happened next in the story, and the short chapters flew by.

The book is comprised of 50 or so short chapters, and although that sounds somewhat intimidating, there are rarely more than 3-4 pages in a chapter, so that there is little fear of becoming lost in a huge, dense novel for young readers or for people wary of very long books.

I love how every chapter of Holes is different. Sometimes you are with Stanley at Camp Green Lake. Other times you are learning about the history of where Stanley’s family’s curse began. The author has done a superb job of alternating between past and present, and it makes for a really engaging read. Why the book is as short as it is, with as many chapters as it has, is that each chapter is very short and can be read in one sitting. Sachar has managed to write a classic in Holes.

As a writer of a middle-grade novel, I’m deeply studying ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar, and one of the major guidelines I’m following for my 50-chapter model is to keep each chapter extremely short and have a very specific purpose. They can have a small arc or even just a huge reveal, but each chapter serves a greater purpose within the novel as a whole. And that purpose is to control the pacing of the novel. Sachar was a genius in that respect. Almost every chapter of ‘Holes’ ends with a huge question, a huge discovery, or an extremely powerful line of dialogue. The structure of a 50-chapter novel of this caliber is both commercially viable and artistically sound for the genre of middle-grade literature, because let’s be real– kids have the shortest attention spans on earth.

I don't know how many chapters there actually are in this book. They all seem to blend together because each chapter follows the story well into the next. I enjoyed the movie adaptation as well. It was a great adaptation because it was condensed to fit into the time of a movie but still managed to get across the spirit of the book. I'm pretty curious to re-read this and find out all of the clever ways that the author set up the structure of the story that nobody has ever mentioned before. I had no idea that a children's book could be so complex beneath the surface of such a simple read.
