Trying to decide if Holes by Louis Sachar is a good weekend read. Can’t tell if the book’s length feels satisfying or too short.

'Holes' by Louis Sachar is a novel of 50 chapters but is a quick read as each chapter is of relatively short length. If you enjoyed reading 'Holes' and are looking for more short stories of similar length then 'Dirty Little Secrets(Short Stories)' is a great choice. 'Dirty Little Secrets(Short Stories)' is a collection of modern fables, each with a single secret that the character trying to keep buried. Each tale is a complete, punchy narrative read in just a few pages per secret.

I remembered that this book was really fast-paced when I first read it. I think it has 50 chapters but for some reason they are all really short. It is almost like a mini-cliffhanger at the end of each chapter. It really makes you want to keep reading.

Each chapter forms a self-contained mini-story, and the whole story is formed of these mini-stories. Many of the chapters are set in the present but contain flashbacks and, slowly but surely, the connections between them all are revealed. The story has 50 chapters, which at first glance can seem like a lot, but the way the chapters are formed adds to the story and is part of its genius. The fact that Sachar has written Holes in this way makes it perfect for reluctant readers, and for people who love fast-paced stories as well as detailed descriptions of characters and their journey.

‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar is one of my favourite books, which I have re-read on many occasions. The book consists of 50 short and punchy chapters, written in such a way that the reader is able to complete each chapter and then return to it later. The connections between Stanley’s present situation and the history of Camp Green Lake are slowly revealed throughout the book, and the way in which Sachar has constructed the story is excellent. I found myself not wanting to put the book down as I was eager to find out what happened next in the story, and the short chapters flew by.

An eternally attentive reader of all books, “Holes” by Louis Sachar is yet another beautifully structured novel. The book is comprised of 50 or so short chapters, and although that sounds somewhat intimidating, there are rarely more than 3-4 pages in a chapter, so that there is little fear of becoming lost in a huge, dense novel for young readers or for people wary of very long books.

I love how every chapter of Holes is different. Sometimes you are with Stanley at Camp Green Lake. Other times you are learning about the history of where Stanley’s family’s curse began. The author has done a superb job of alternating between past and present, and it makes for a really engaging read. Why the book is as short as it is, with as many chapters as it has, is that each chapter is very short and can be read in one sitting. Sachar has managed to write a classic in Holes.

What is more interesting than the figure of 50 chapters in a book of this length is how the chapters are used. Each of the chapters is a short story, used to create the large puzzle of the book. While some of the chapters are just a page or two of Stanley’s desperate struggle to survive, others are long and full of history, even myth. These folk-tale-like chapters are so rich that even the digging of holes, an inherently repetitive activity, never becomes dull. In a non-linear story such as this, young readers will learn about the form of the story without even realizing that they are being taught. The fifty chapters of the book are not random; they are the structural basis for the book’s unique rhythm and for why this book is a Newbery Medal winner.
