Where Can I Read Alien Romance Books For Free Online?

Classic romance novels with forbidden love have long been my favorite, and I highly recommend many of the classics available for free on Project Gutenberg, such as Jane Eyre for instance. Modern versions of forbidden love can be found in Kindle’s free book samples, on Wattpad under the tag “forbidden love”, and I recently picked up The Siren by Tiffany Reisz for only $0.00 during one of her promotions. Be sure to sign up for an author’s newsletter as they tend to offer up free exclusive content to their subscribers from time to time, many of which are indie written.

Beware the generic ebook aggregator sites like PDF Drive or ManyBooks. Some of the free PDF e-books listed on these sites are possibly classics or even older indie titles which have been added without the authors’ permission (i.e. are out of copyright). It’s a case where it’s hard to tell whether it’s legal or not. These would be a last resort after going through legal channels to get free eBooks from authors and supporting them on platforms where you get to watch ads or sign up for their newsletters. But if you do find a great eBook through these types of sites, try to track down the author’s official website or their Amazon author page. Even just leaving a positive review will help them earn money to continue writing more great eBooks for you to read for free, and by supporting them through official channels you’re helping to create a healthy ecosystem that will continue to produce great amounts of free content.

I love spicy romance and free books! So, here is a great list to start with. Goodreads lists all Freebies in a section and if you search for Romance, you can find all Freebie Romance eBooks. Also, the Kindle store on Amazon lists free eBooks when you sort by price and choose eBooks (low to high). AO3 has an explicit filter, so for fanfiction, that’s a big treasure trove of stories. There are also authors who post free short stories on their own websites (like Alexa Riley). There’s also a romancebooks subreddit on Reddit where people post and request free romance ebooks. Be wary of shady sites offering “free” romance ebooks, though – try to stick to legal sources in order to support the romance community.

I mentioned before that 'free' often means our attention is used to view ads. On web-based sites where you can read free novels online or even on your mobile Wattpad account, you will find ads such as banners and videos on the pages where you read. I have mentioned before that we have a browser extension that blocks ads on sites where we read online. However, these usually only take a few seconds to load and we can easily factor this in. Also, some apps have a free version and a paid ad-free version, and the paid version is only monthly! These are essentially payments for the content that you’ve read for free. If you’re reading authors who post on Radish or Dreame for example, they earn based off ad views as well as engagement with their free chapters. That means even though you’re not spending a dime and there are moments where you have to sit through an ad, you’re paying for the stories that you read in other ways.

Within the romance novels field I currently specialize in translated novels originally published in other languages (Korean webnovels, Japanese light novels, Chinese danmei novels). Getting hold of a free legal copy of such a novel is not as easy as it is with English language novels. Most webnovels are serialized, and even completed ones are rarely translated and made available for free, especially when they are official translations. (Exceptions are made when there is an anime adaptation for example.) Once more, your best bet for accessing free translated romance would be your local library, as some systems have started adding titles from platforms such as OverDrive’s Global Chinese collection, or even partner with comic and app services that offer translated webnovels. Demand for translated novels is up in recent years, but as of now there is still not as much access as there is to English-language romance novels. Free samples of novels from official aggregator sites for translated novels are typically how you can look at free samples of a specific sub-genre before you buy it.

The best way to access free military romance online would be to start with ZLibrary (z-lib.io). The website can be a bit confusing to use but I managed to find ‘Night Strike’ by Linda Night there. For more amateur/heartfelt military romance, the tag system on Wattpad is really good. ‘Soldier’s Heart’ by RainonSan Diego is a good example. Many libraries support OverDrive, which I use to read free eBooks, including “Into the Storm” by Melanie Moreland. Search for “military romance” and filter by “available now”.

Looking for free dark romance books can be a fun search for hidden treasure. BookBub is the best source for me to receive emails about free ebooks and discounts on the dark romance books I love. I have recently downloaded Fear Me by BB Reid and the other 4 books in this collection within the last month. Another site that I haven’t visited in awhile but deserves some recognition is Smashwords. I often find that indie authors list their darker novels for free on this site and recently downloaded Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters. Tapas has a Dark Romance section where you can read the beginning of novels for free and then subscribe to read the rest of the story for as low as $.59/month. I just finished reading The Devil’s Contract, which was so twisted and addicting. I also wrote about how to find free and cheap audiobooks on YouTube and found a full reading of a public domain dark romance novel as well as an indie work. There are also a few Discord servers for romance novel readers, including one I joined last year. Every now and again the members will share some freebies that are temporarily available to download from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Remember to check the legitimacy of the site offering the freebies, as not all do this in a copyright-respecting manner.

For me, finding free books is half the fun. I follow various hashtags such as #DragonRomance and #FreeBook on Twitter (or X as it’s now called), and in addition to many indie authors posting information about their e-books on their own websites, there are often free download days on Amazon e-books. All of these e-books are fully complete and have been edited professionally – even if they are only free for a limited time. BookBub is another service that can inform you of various free e-books, and I have alerts set up for ‘Fantasy Romance’ and ‘Free’ deals. With great patience, I have been able to build up a large digital library of dragon shifter e-books.

I spent hours researching ways to download free eBooks, including venturing into the free sections of big retailers like Amazon, which only stock the first book in a series. But then I discovered author’s newsletters and their websites. I found out that a lot of indie dark romance authors give away full-length novels or long novellas as reader magnets to subscribe to their newsletter. I’m talking about authors like Amelia Wilde, Sam Mariano, and Trisha Wolfe. Check if your local library uses apps like Libby or Hoopla for borrowing eBooks, audiobooks and documentaries. I was surprised by how many current dark romance titles are available to borrow for free with my library card. No waiting months for the eBook to become available, it’s the most legit way to read for free without having to rely on shady websites.

I also love BookBub as they often include romance eBooks in their daily deals and I can even find some free ones for a limited time. Most of them are Kindle eBooks so you will need a Kindle or a free Kindle app. If you want something different again then Tapas (which is read chapter by chapter rather like a comic and can be read online for free in bite sized chunks) has a number of romantic comics and stories. Also Amazon Kindle free section has, for me, been a source of some very good self-published romances (yes really!).
