Most webnovels can be found on aggregator sites or on fan translation blogs, and many that were originally on Booktoki are still available on those sites. However, be warned that some of the sites have pop-ups and don’t always offer the best quality. If you’re looking for more reliable free webnovels, many are available on sites such as Webnovel, or as part of apps that offer ad-supported novels. Right now, I’m reading something similar, ‘The Billionaire’s Forbidden Desire(One contract. One rule)’ on one of those apps with the first bunch of chapters available for free. It starts off with an intense scene where the two leads enter into a legally-binding contract which instantly locks them into a power struggle – and that’s all for free.

Booktoki is a Korean web novel platform that offers a large selection of books, many of which can only be read for free on certain official sources that charge for their content or generate ad revenue. The only free versions of Booktoki novels that I have been able to find are a few scattered fan-translations of some of the books on novel aggregator websites. The quality of these free novels is often very hit or miss, read very well by some translators and poorly by others who seem to have relied heavily on Google Translate to produce their work.

Yes, there are many fans out there who share copies of these novels in PDF or EPUB form on Novel sites’ forums, on Novel discourse on their respective Discord servers, and in Korean Novel-related subreddits, but note that much of this is illegal and none of it is up to date. It would be better to support the official release of these novels, even if it is only partially free to read and even then only on a trial basis. As well as supporting the authors and translators of these novels in getting paid for their work, free versions of novels typically lack editing and so are full of errors.

You see why people want to read free books. Budgets for books can be slim. For Booktoki novels, I found out about obscure blogs that post up chapters for free and they usually disappear after a few days. You can search for the free read or PDF version of the Korean title and sometimes you can find old threads on forums where people have uploaded the chapters to Dropbox. Be careful because there are so many ads and suspicious links. The best place to find free read versions of Booktoki novels would be through fan communities but remember, these are unofficial versions so you can never be sure. If you loved a series, consider spending a few bucks to get the official version when it comes out because then the author will get paid to write more books.

This question comes up a lot. The cost to run these translation sites is for hosting, and unofficially for the translators’ time. We get by on ad revenue from these rather shady ads on the site. If you really can’t afford to pay, check out your local library’s digital services. There are Hoopla and Libby apps for your phone or tablet that have graphic novels and manga, as well as some current serialized fiction. All of it is 100% free and totally legal and safe. The particular Korean web novel you’re looking for might not be on these services, but you may find something better, and certainly something you wouldn’t have read otherwise. Instead of focusing on that one difficult-to-get work, read lots of different things to expand your horizons.

To keep people coming back to these sites, they have been designed to exploit people's curiosity about what a given story might be. So descriptions of stories are generally written to be very enticing, and the cover art is frequently very good. But then there's the actual content, which is an afterthought of the ads that are the real business on the site. The reading experience on these sites of free stories with ads is generally very bad. It's not the stories that are the product being delivered well to you so you'll keep coming back to read more stories, it's the bait that gets you to come to the site to click on the ads. That's a pretty depressing relationship to have with the stories you love. On a legitimate platform, even free with ads, you are the customer. The story is the product that they are trying to deliver well to you so you'll stick around to read more. It's a completely different dynamic, and you can see it in every detail of the experience.
