I’m currently reading Grand Blue Dreaming officially licensed on the Kodansha K Manga app as well as on Comixology/Amazon Kindle store, which supports the creators of the work. Classic with absolutely ridiculous content relating to a diving club. Recently, I also read through the entire web novel ‘Wild Dreams [Story Collection]’. It’s an absolute comedic escape in the form of completely absurd and individual self-contained stories. In said stories, the main protagonist attempts to reach for world peace using a sentient toaster.

Online, finding the manga ‘Grand Blue Dreaming’ online is a wild goose chase. Typically I just go to the Kodansha Bookstore where it’s published ( Chapters go up as HQ scan版). Other free, legal online versions of manga that have early chapters such as Manga Plus did the trick for me too (you read the first chapter for free there).

I prefer to avoid the fan translation sites for Grand Blue Dreaming and read the official version as it is translated better for comedic timing. By buying the volumes for Grand Blue Dreaming you help to create more of the crazy and absurd scenes that the characters get themselves into in this manga. You can also follow the official Twitter account for the manga and they sometimes announce free chapters or promotions. After the beer-water scene in this volume, I would be happy to support the creators properly for more stories like that.

I’m attempting to read “Grand Blue Dreaming” right now and it’s a real mess, pretty much like the manga itself. The chapters have been coming out pretty consistently on Viz Media’s subscription and on Manga Plus, so I’d recommend one of those over searching around for a bunch of aggregators that will probably harbor some malware to get you ripped off.

I got Right Stuf Anime on sale for some of the physical copies but other than that I am a digital reader. If you have apps for your phone or tablet, you can get the Shonen Jump subscription service for a pretty low price and get a bunch of other manga. Just don’t read “Grand Blue Dreaming” in public like I do, then you’ll hear random snort-laughs in the middle of silence.

One of the funnier titles I’ve read recently is Grand Blue Dreaming'. Online versions can sometimes be hard to find, and it is always a pleasure to visit certain channels (Crunchyroll Manga for example) which have properly translated versions of the title (note: not free to read though). The Crunchyroll and Comixology shops have great translated copies of the title as well. Sometimes I buy titles to keep for later on Kindle or Google Play Books (verses lending from a library for example), so I can re-read favorite sections, like Iori’s next terrible life decision for example.

If you can’t afford to buy the manga online, you can check your local library’s collection of e-books on services such as Hoopla and see if they have Grand Blue Dreaming available (note that not all titles are available on all services and are only available for a certain time). If you do choose to buy a copy of the manga online, avoid buying from ‘used’ online stores or scanlation sites – these can frequently have very poor quality scans of the manga, which would be a shame for such a beautifully drawn series. And remember, most of the fun of reading a series online is discussing it with other fans of the series online. You’ll definitely want to be able to refer to a good quality copy of the manga when arguing with fellow fans about Iori’s next terrible life choice.

I'm gonna do you a favor here and you can just Google “Grand Blue Dreaming Chapter 1” and click through to the top results until you find one that doesn’t give your computer AIDS. Bookmark the one that looks the least horrible to you. The official routes exist for a reason, but they’re not necessarily going to be the most accessible or affordable for people in other countries. Don’t let anyone give you grief for reading a comic about scuba diving and drinking lighter fluid online.

I kind of miss bookstores, when they would have a big manga section. You could just pick up a random volume of something, flip through it a bit. For online, I use the ‘look inside’ functionality on Amazon and Google Play, which usually lets you read the first 20-30 pages or so for free. That’s sort of the online equivalent of browsing for a book, and it’s a good way to determine whether a thing is going to be funny enough for you, and whether the art style is up your alley. The first chapter of Grand Blue is a great representation of the chaos that ensues in the series, so the free preview is a great way to see if the book is for you.

You link your public library card to your account, and you can borrow digital versions of manga volumes (etc.) for FREE. It’s completely and utterly LEGAL too, and the creators/publishers of the manga get paid a tiny amount for each borrow. The selection varies from library to library depending on their budget, but (for example) Grand Blue is a really popular one that loads of libraries stock, so you should be able to get it on there. Yes, there may be a waitlist for the most popular titles, but it’s FREE, and you can read it on ANY device. This is, without a doubt, the most ethical and cost-effective way to read manga if you have a decent local library system.

I read ‘Grand Blue’ on my Kindle Paperwhite. E-ink is wonderful for your eyes, and I download the official volumes of manga on Amazon so I can read them offline wherever I am. It’s not as smooth as guided view on a tablet app, but it does work. My main point is that it’s hassle-free, no notifications, no browsing around, just your manga. For me, that’s how I like to binge read a series once there’s a few volumes out. For ‘Grand Blue’ the humor and the multi-panel gag pages are still clear and the black-and-white is rendered beautifully on the e-ink screen of my Kindle. Great for long-term reading comfort.

At its core the points system is simple: you purchase points and spend them to permanently add chapters to your library. The cost of new chapters typically runs about 69 points (or 69 cents), but you can purchase points in bulk to get the most out of your money. The only other option that they have available is the ‘Fast Pass’ which allows you to read ahead of regular releases. I’ll note that while the app is functional, it is not as polished as Shonen Jump’s. However, for people who read a lot of Kodansha Manga, it can get expensive quickly. However, for people who follow only a couple of titles, it can be pretty affordable.
