It's also good to point out the cons of reading online. Most people will just blurt out "syosetu.com" but very few actually explain the site's flaws. For one, the mobile version of the site is incredibly hard to navigate. And even with the best of browser extensions, the text on the site looks horrible. Of course, the official site is supposed to be the best way to read online, but the experience isn't always smooth. The page will sometimes reload for no reason, and in the ads section, there are so many banner ads that it's a pain to read. If you do end up reading online, just be prepared for the website to be just as hard to deal with as the language itself. Having realistic expectations for the online reading experience can save you a lot of frustration.

Man, I totally get the hunt for free reads—especially with web novels like 'The Regressed Mercenary’s Machinations.' It’s such a hidden gem! I stumbled across it a while back on sites like Webnovel or Novel Updates, where fan translations sometimes pop up. Just be warned: unofficial translations can be hit-or-miss in quality, and they might not have the latest chapters.
If you’re into supporting creators, the official release might be on platforms like Tapas or Tappytoon, but yeah, they’re paywalled. I’ve also seen snippets on blogs or forums, but those can disappear overnight. Honestly, half the fun is the scavenger hunt—just brace for dead links and sketchy pop-ups.

There are so many places to read series like these that can get taken down or removed at a moment’s notice, though. The sites that host fan translations get DMCA’ed constantly. Following specific scanlation groups on Discord or their private forums for a series is usually the best bet. You can often get links to where to read the most current chapter in a channel when it comes out. It may require a bit more effort to just bookmark a site to read than to follow a link, but this is how the community reads. It’s best not to rely on a single public aggregator for a long period of time. They tend to be the first to get taken down.

If you’re looking for more books of a similar nature to Fitzpatrick’s work, then the read-alike lists on Goodreads are pure gold! ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ and ‘Along for the Ride’ by by Jenny Han and Sarah Dessen respectively are excellent choices as are ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ and the rest of the Monty Leo series by Morgan Matson. Whilst nothing can quite compare to the unique voice of Huntley Fitzpatrick, I hope these recommendations will help to fill the void left by the two connected novels by this incredible author.

This psychological tension in 'Ward D' is really impressive, and deserves to be supported. I bought the ebook after reading a sample – the first few chapters pull you in a hundred percent, I was hooked. The sample is actually one of the best marketing tools sometimes.
Most books, including mine, have a sample that you can read for free on Amazon or Google Play in most countries. It’s usually the first couple of chapters. If you’re not hooked within that then you’ve saved yourself a lot of time and money. And if you are hooked, then you’re more likely to either buy the book immediately or place a hold on it at your local library. So it’s a great way to test drive a book for free.

I'm still trying to process everything and would really like to have a thread for the epilogue as I've heard there are different editions of this and some of them include an extra chapter or two set years after the main story and others don't. Mine doesn't and I'm actually kind of okay with that. The silence and abrupt ending of our protagonist sitting in her car with the engine off in her driveway was more powerful than any ending or resolution to her story. The twist is what's keeping her trapped in that car in that moment for the rest of her life. Going inside would be a completely different book and probably not as good.

I do not remember any specific scenes or even chapters from the book, but I am reminded of a certain feeling or mood that it evoked. The feeling was one of emptiness but it was good. It was like the feeling that one gets after eating a large meal and then sitting around feeling full and satisfied. I do not remember closing the book and lying on my back staring at the ceiling for what seemed like hours, but that is probably what I did. A good ending to a book is often not about the plot but about the mood that it evokes and how long that mood lasts with the reader. Perhaps I should read it again. Does anyone want to do a buddy read with me to help out my poor memory?

I’ve tried to search for titles similar to this before and ended up getting lost in a whole load of content farms that seem to publish a load of work ‘for free’ in order to get in up the search rankings. It’s very problematic for creators, and can be quite dangerous. The route to finding ‘genuine’ online copies of work is actually usually more time-consuming and less favourable for search algorithms, such as checking an author’s social media or official website, or searching for their work on established online publishing platforms.

One of the key areas to bring to life is the comedy and warmth of the situations, particularly in domestic scenes. As a premise the story is very dark but a lot of web novels manage to tackle serious subject matter with a balance of tone and a large portion of humor and heart in the raw. Scenes where the Protagonist is struggling to hide a minor magical injury and coming up with excuses, or going shopping with the Girl for groceries while secretly fearing he’s being followed by a Shadow Beast are likely to be contrasted against the horror scenes to make them even scarier, and the quiet moments between them more precious. The Girl’s normalcy and the difference it makes to the Protagonist is also likely to be a source of a lot of relief and comedy, and her being utterly unphased by situations that the Protagonist is on edge about, or her hilarious misinterpretation of magical events are likely to bring a lot of levity to the situations. This aspect of the story captures the author’s natural comedic timing and would be hard to translate well.

If I need to find information about something on the internet, I usually first try to search for it on Reddit. For this novel, a search for ‘site:reddit.com “The Player Hides His Past” free’ will pull up old threads from r/noveltranslations and r/OtomeIsekai where people with similar questions have posted. Because Reddit posts are time stamped, you can easily tell if a link to a novel that was posted two years ago is no longer available. But you might also find a user who mentions a currently active novel, or explains the system of an official platform in great detail. Crowdsourced info is the best!
