‘Suddenly I Became a Princess’ is currently one of my favorite web novels and manhwa, written by an extremely talented author. Official English translations are available on Tapas or Tappytoon, and new chapters are added every week. Webtoon might have a manhwa adaptation of this web novel as ‘Who Made Me a Princess’ (although this may not be available in all regions). There were once fan translations on aggregators but these are less reliable and of lower quality than official translations – plus they help to pay the writers and artists to keep making the story! I read this completely by accident a while back and then binge read the whole thing. The art is lovely and the protagonist is immediately like-able due to her wit. There are some BRUTAL cliffhangers though so be warned.

Cinderella is one of the most iconic happily-ever-afters of all time, with the heroine ditching her abusive family after the prince finds her with the help of the glass slipper. What makes it last is the satisfying emotional payoff of having a perfect and loving life with someone who values her. Of course, there are versions of Cinderella out there where the wicked stepsisters get their eyes pecked out by pigeons. But that’s not the main story. The main story is that goodness wins, and that’s really all we want from our stories. It’s very satisfying. There’s a collective sigh of relief as we watch Cinderella walk into her palace, knowing she’s found her true home with someone who loves her to pieces.

The Google Play Books store contains a huge amount of self-published works. Many of the Indie books are listed, and you can even read a free sample before you buy to get a feel for how good the writing and translation are. The Google Play Books app is also pretty good for reading on the go.

So a quick checklist of places I’d want to search for a title like ‘Abandoned by My Stepbrother’ would be to search the exact title in quotes plus the names of retailers where I’d normally buy a book (Amazon, Google Play, Kobo etc) – and then to search for the title on sites where it might be serialized (like Tapas or Webnovel). I’d also check an author’s social media accounts for links to where you can read their work. If I cannot find a title online (even using search terms like a full book title plus retailer names), I search for the title on library apps (e.g. Libby, OverDrive, Hoopla) — sometimes less-commercial releases are made available via digital lending to libraries and their patrons. As for unofficial versions of a work, I generally avoid PDF “dumps” as well as scanlation “mirror sites”. Although such sources may provide access to content in a timely manner, they are generally unreliable and may be detrimental to the authors and other individuals involved in the work’s production. When I am able to locate a legitimate copy of a work, I attempt to access it through official channels, even if only on a pay-per-chapter basis. There is much to be said for a clean, safe reading experience. Even tracking down the “correct” edition of a work can be fun, and leads to a very satisfying reading experience in the end.

But unlike the very faithful first season of television, there are large and soon increasing deviations from the original text as the season goes on. You can experience Wattpad totally for free by downloading the Wattpad app from your device’s app store. It’s totally legitimate and safe and there’s tons of content. The mobile experience is actually really cool because you can read in little chunks. There’s also the option to download individual stories so you can read them offline when you’re on the move or have no internet. I’ve wasted hours of my life browsing the horror tag and finding tons of super original and creepy stories that you wouldn’t find in a normal bookstore. One minor complaint is that there are video ads for chapters, but that can be kind of broken from a reading perspective anyway. For people who don’t want to see ads though, you can subscribe for a premium version of Wattpad and it’s really not needed to read the vast majority of the stories though. The social features to read lists of other users’ favorite stories is really great for finding new stories too.

I also love BookBub as they often include romance eBooks in their daily deals and I can even find some free ones for a limited time. Most of them are Kindle eBooks so you will need a Kindle or a free Kindle app. If you want something different again then Tapas (which is read chapter by chapter rather like a comic and can be read online for free in bite sized chunks) has a number of romantic comics and stories. Also Amazon Kindle free section has, for me, been a source of some very good self-published romances (yes really!).

For starters, Ticci Toby’s story is a lot like a campfire tale. Most people tell it a bit differently. So, I went to YouTube first. I found a decent amount of information on the story, especially when it comes to the lore behind the creepypasta. Channels like Lazy Masquerade are very good at explaining certain stories in great detail. I also found a good eBook called ‘Creepypasta: A Horror Anthology’ that contains Toby’s story as well as many other classic creepypastas. For people who are curious about how the story was originally told on the web, there is even a site called Wayback Machine that has old versions of Geocities-style websites where the story first started to spread.
