How Should I Read Kyle Mills Mitch Rapp Books In Order?

Loving Kyle Mills' take on the Mitch Rapp series but confused about where to start after Vince Flynn. Anyone else mapped out the timeline after the original author passed away?

Look, the books are formulaic in the best way. Rapp identifies a threat, bureaucracy gets in his way, he works around it, things go boom. Order isn't that crucial. You won't ruin anything.

Pick the one with the synopsis that grabs you. 'Red War'? Cool. 'Total Power'? Go for it. Enjoy the ride and don't stress the sequence.

My two cents: The prequels ('American Assassin', 'Kill Shot') are weaker entries. Starting there might give you a lukewarm first impression. Dive into the core of the series with 'Consent to Kill' or 'Executive Power'—peak Flynn, breakneck pacing.

If you love it, then go back to the beginning of the timeline to see how Rapp became that guy.

The continuity between books is looser than you think. Key characters live or die, and Rapp ages, but each novel is a standalone crisis. You could read 'Lethal Agent' before 'Executive Power' and follow the plot just fine.

The through-line is Rapp's personality and his conflicts with the CIA leadership. That's established quickly in any book.

The audiobooks are the way to go. George Guidall's voice is Mitch Rapp. Start with 'Transfer of Power' and just let the series play out in publication order. It's like listening to a long, fantastic radio play.

I've 'read' the entire series three times this way while commuting. The order is baked into my brain now.

Vince Flynn's original series is a masterclass in post-9/11 thriller writing. Kyle Mills's continuation is a competent, if sometimes repetitive, homage. Treat them as two connected series.

Read all of Flynn first, in the order he wrote them. Take a break. Then decide if you want more of that world, knowing it will be a slightly different flavor.
