Instead of consuming a whole story in one sleepless night and then feeling inadequate the next day, the system makes you appreciate each story chapter by chapter. For ‘Pearl Boy’ you can read the first bunch of chapters all in one go and then get a few more each day. This system builds anticipation. Reading ‘Pearl Boy’ for free on another website would just give me the whole story at once, which would feel vacant and like I stole it. Most of them are Kindle eBooks so you will need a Kindle or a free Kindle app. If you want something different again then Tapas (which is read chapter by chapter rather like a comic and can be read online for free in bite sized chunks) has a number of romantic comics and stories. Also Amazon Kindle free section has, for me, been a source of some very good self-published romances (yes really!).
