I’ve been in this kind of situation before – I want to read the latest series of manga but I don’t have the money to spend on it. Right now for Daemons of the Shadow Realm, you can sign up to the publishers’ (Kodansha etc.) newsletters to receive links to read free chapters. Many universities also have a selection of manga in their digital archives – I know that at least some universities have students who have access to it and I’m sure there are others. Although reading manga online is often great, there is nothing quite like the real thing – crisp pages, great art etc. So maybe just treat yourself to Vol. 1 of Daemons of the Shadow Realm and see if it is worth your money. The art is typically great and you will be helping to vote for more of the same kind of content in the future.

This is my own hack, but I can read chapters on both Webnovel and Tapas in a row. Since both Webnovel and Tapas have almost identical promotions for new users (i.e. free passes and free daily chapters) reading on both will effectively double the amount of free chapters you can read at the beginning. The only catch is that you need to keep track of your progress (since the chapter numbering might differ if the chapters are bundled in a different way) by either keeping track of it mentally or by writing it down in a note somewhere. It requires a bit of extra work, but it works.

I was also rather affected by the scenes after the final battle. After saving his town from destruction, parts of it were left in ruins, and though Hyou had saved many lives, the remaining civilians would stare at him in horror, as if he had become a monster just like the one he had fought. It seemed that saving his little sister with his strange power had cost him his place in the community, and in the final pages we see Hyou looking at his hands in shock and dismay. It was an ending that was far more introspective than I had expected, and shows that Hyou is an interesting hero.

Has anyone here actually read this? Is it any good? The premise sounds interesting and it’s a thing I’d read. I’m skeptical of web-serials-turned-ebooks, because so many of them have poor pacing, having been written for daily updates as opposed to one, long novel. If it’s worth the money to buy it, or even just to put a hold on it at my library, then I’ll seek it out. But if it’s just going to be mediocre, then no, I won’t go looking for a free ecopy. A brief, spoiler-free review from someone in this thread would be much more useful to me than a link to read it. Quality should get quality effort from me.

Reading the free parts and then coming back to the story after a break can also work. Once in a while Webnovel has a site-wide promotion, where privilege chapters are cheaper or even all series have a ‘free access weekend’. I’ve been stockpiling coins during those big sales and as a result, the cost for me to read more has turned from prohibitive to manageable. There are tons of great progression fantasies that offer much more free content on Royal Road, or even 100% free on the author’s website. ‘Shadow Slave’ is great and all, but there are so many more games to play, so to speak. Diversifying my reading makes the waiting for free access or sales much less painful.

I’ve tried to search for titles similar to this before and ended up getting lost in a whole load of content farms that seem to publish a load of work ‘for free’ in order to get in up the search rankings. It’s very problematic for creators, and can be quite dangerous. The route to finding ‘genuine’ online copies of work is actually usually more time-consuming and less favourable for search algorithms, such as checking an author’s social media or official website, or searching for their work on established online publishing platforms.

I don’t want to be a budget police person, but it’s generally accepted that “free” for a full length work means a pirated copy. This is a bit of an ethical conundrum. If the work is very new, the author and publisher are trying to earn a living from it. You might check with your local library to see if they have a digital lending version of Hoopla or Libby, which contains a large variety of books, including many surprises. But if you can’t get it that way, then the “high seas” of pirated copies are out there. And yes, there is a lot of pain (and even more malware) in trying to navigate these sites in order to read a single work before you buy the whole series.

Eternal conundrum of the manhwa. My preferred way to consume The Remarried Empress would be to steer clear of sites with too many pop-ups, and consider subscribing to Manta (affordable) for a full range of titles or waiting for individual chapters to go on sale through Tappytoon for coins. Occasionally cleaned panels can be found on the often-dreary and unorganized boards of fans on Pinterest. My solution thus far has been to follow the twitter of the manhwa’s official translator for sporadic free updates and to re-read the downfall of Sovieshu in Vol. 3. It’s as great as ever.
