I accidentally read the second Jack Warr book first. There were references to the first book's case, but it was handled like backstory—'that business with the X last year.' It didn't ruin anything. It actually made me curious to go back and read 'Buried' to get the full details. So, even within a sub-series, the order isn't set in stone.

My book club did a hybrid. We read the first Tennison and the first Warr simultaneously. Comparing the different eras of policing, the different personal struggles of Jane versus Jack, was the best discussion we've had in years. It wasn't about plot order; it was about thematic parallels. So maybe consider a paired reading approach for richer analysis.

It depends if you're a marathoner or a sampler. Marathoner? Publication order. You'll live in that world for months. Sampler? Read the most acclaimed book from each series—maybe 'Good Friday' for Tennison and 'Buried' for Warr. See which character's world you want to inhabit for multiple books, then commit to that series in order.

The character of Jane Tennison is a monumental piece of crime fiction. To fully appreciate her complexity and the weight of her legacy—which hangs over the Warr books—you should walk every step of her path. Start with 'Tennison.' Witness her struggles, her victories, her compromises. Then, see how that history shapes the present in Warr's stories.

Don't sleep on the audiobooks if you commute. The narrator is fantastic. I 'read' them all in publication order during my drives. It turned my car into a time machine, shifting from 1970s London to the present day and back again through the two series. The performance really ties the whole universe together.

Luke doesn't do relationships, he enjoys a long line of willing women and has no desire to change that.
One day the new girl at school asks him to teach her how to kiss. No relationship, no strings, a simple student/teacher relationship or is it?
If you're looking for a deeper dive, the chronological order is the publication order, but think about it thematically. 'Buried' is about secrets from the past literally being unearthed. 'The Ties That Bind' deals with the obligations and connections those secrets create. 'Pure Evil' confronts the nature of morality in the present. Reading them in order lets you see that thematic progression, which is quite satisfying.
It's a straight line, but one that plunges downhill fast. The first investigation is a steep learning curve. The second is a sprint on unstable ground. The third is a freefall. The pace and tone of each book reflect that increasing velocity toward disaster. La Plante controls the reader's descent masterfully by sticking to this order.
You start with a measured mystery and end in a breathless race for survival. Reversing the order would be emotionally and tonally disjointed, like watching the climax before the first act.
Has anyone else noticed the covers? The first one has this dark, watery vibe that perfectly matches the mood of the book. It’s a small thing, but sometimes the aesthetic can pull you in. I picked up 'The Girl in the Moss' purely because the cover gave me those chilly, Nordic noir feels even though it’s set in the UK. Sometimes your gut pick based on the cover or title isn’t wrong! That said, for this series, the cover tone is pretty consistent, so you can’t go wrong visually.
Wait, has there been any announcement about a fifth book? I know 'The Teacher' just came out, but I'm already hungry for more. Anyway, to answer the question: 'The Murder Rule', 'The Patient', 'The Secret', 'The Teacher'. That's the roadmap.
I love a series with a clear, chronological release schedule. It makes collecting and reading them so much easier. No confusing prequels released years later that mess up the timeline. Just a solid, forward-moving detective saga. I hope it continues for a long time.
I wish more series were this simple. No convoluted timelines, no alternate starting points. Just book one through book seven (so far). Pick up 'The Terminal List', and if you like it, you have a clear path forward. It's reader-friendly in that sense.
