I'd argue the 'right' order is the order that keeps you reading. If you force yourself through a combined list and get bored, you'll miss out. Follow your interest. See a fun title? Read it. Love a cover? Read it. The series are robust enough to handle it. The mystery genre is built on standalone entries with recurring characters for a reason.

Honestly, half the fun is in the book titles. 'Death of a Gossip.' 'Agatha Raisin and the Potted Gardener.' How can you resist? I judge them purely by title appeal. My first was 'Agatha Raisin and the Vicious Vet' because, come on, that title. I wasn't lost. The mysteries are self-contained puzzles with continuing soap opera elements for the regulars.

I see a lot of people overthinking this. They're cozy mysteries. The stakes are low. The murder is just an excuse to spend time with charming characters. Open any book. If you like the first chapter, keep reading. If not, try another. Life's too short for complex reading charts when the point is relaxation.

My book club did Agatha Raisin in order for a year. It was a blast seeing everyone's reactions to her terrible decisions. We'd never have gotten that gradual character study if we'd jumped around. So if you're reading for character, order matters. If you're reading for a puzzle, it doesn't. Decide which camp you're in.

The Hamish series has a slightly darker edge sometimes, dealing with rural poverty and isolation. Agatha's problems are more social and personal. Which appeals to you? Start there.
