Honestly, I think publication order is the safest bet. 'After', 'After We Collided', 'After We Fell', 'After Ever Happy'. Then the spin-offs.
I made the mistake of trying to read 'Before' first because it's a prequel, and it totally ruined the mystery of Hardin's character for me. A big part of the initial books is figuring out why he's such a wreck, and having all that backstory upfront made Tessa's frustration with him feel less relatable. The reveals in the main series lost their punch.
So yeah, save the extra perspective books for later. They're like bonus features, not part of the main event.

Read 1, 2, 3, 4. That’s it. 'After' through 'After Ever Happy'. The other books are just extras if you’re still hooked. The main story has a complete, albeit chaotic, arc in those four. Don’t overcomplicate it.

Navigating the 'After' series order can get messy, especially with all the companion books.
The core is the main four novels following Tessa and Hardin: 'After', 'After We Collided', 'After We Fell', and 'After Ever Happy'. That's your essential, linear story.
Where it gets optional is with the prequel, 'Before', which is from Hardin's perspective before meeting Tessa. It adds context but isn't necessary for the main plot's momentum. Personally, I read it after finishing the core four because going back to his past felt more poignant once I knew where their toxic mess was headed.
The 'After' universe then expanded with books like 'Nothing More' and 'Nothing Less', focusing on Landon. I haven't dived into those yet – the main saga was enough drama for me. My advice? Stick to the core four in order first, then decide if you want more of that world.

Book One: A Choice Lost to Fate
Book Two: A Choice to Survive
Book Three: A Choice Bound in Blood
Claire Hart loved her husband, Fabian Arrow, for seven years with unwavering devotion. She believed their quiet marriage—free of passion but rich in stability—was built on mutual trust and unspoken understanding. Even when affection faded into routine, Claire convinced herself that love did not need to be loud to be real.
She was wrong.
On the day everything finally fractures, Claire discovers that Fabian has been secretly reconnecting with his first love, Maxine Wells. What begins as emotional distance soon reveals itself as betrayal—but the deepest wound comes from an innocent voice. Claire overhears her young daughter, Susie, wishing that Maxine were her real mother, and Maxine calmly promising to make that wish come true.
In that moment, Claire reaches her breaking point.
Without confrontation or drama, she walks away from a marriage she fought alone to save. What she leaves behind is not just a husband, but a life built on silent endurance and misplaced hope.
As Fabian slowly realizes that love is not something that can be replaced or postponed, regret comes too late. Claire, determined to reclaim herself, crosses paths once more with Aaron White—a man from her past who once loved her deeply and never truly let her go. With Aaron, Claire begins to understand what love looks like when it is patient, present, and chosen every day.
Torn between a past that broke her and a future that promises healing, Claire must decide whether love deserves a second chance—or whether the bravest choice is to let go and move forward.
After the Breaking Point is a poignant story of betrayal, self-worth, and rediscovering love after loss, proving that sometimes the end of one love story is the beginning of a far greater one.
Zoebella emerges from the fallout shelter, alone and unprepared for the ravished earth left behind after the downfall of society.
Creatures that once belonged in fairytales now rule over the remnants of civilization's collapse, men who can shift into wolves at will instill fear into humankind's few remaining survivors.
Zoe learns how to endure this new environment and its deceitful inhabitants through literal blood, sweat, and tears, two protectors aiding her throughout her journey.
Yet, each male tempts her in their own unique way, leaving Zoe torn on which path to venture forward into the unknown, but she may not be able to outlast what the weather and fate still have in store for her.
Can Zoebella outrun the monsters chasing her, or will she run straight into the arms of someone much worse?

The 'After' series by Anna Todd certainly has an order that makes the most sense, and it can get a bit confusing with all the extra novels and alternate points of view floating around. If you want to follow the core, tumultuous relationship between Tessa and Hardin, you should start with 'After', then move on to 'After We Collided', 'After We Fell', and finish their main saga with 'After Ever Happy'. That's the central four-book arc that chronicles their entire rollercoaster from college meeting to all the intense drama that follows.
Now, after that, things expand. There's 'Before', which is a collection of prequel stories from Hardin's perspective, but honestly, I'd read that after the main four. It hits differently when you already know the fraught, complicated person he becomes. The most significant addition is 'Nothing More' and 'Nothing Less', which focus on Landon and Nora's love story. They're set during and after the events of the main series, and they provide a sweeter, calmer counterbalance to Tessa and Hardin's chaos. You can dip into those after 'After We Fell' or once you've finished everything.
Then there are the 'After' movies, which condense the books but follow the same basic sequence. If you're a completist, you might seek out the 'Before' prequel film too. The reading order really depends on how deep you want to go—the four main books give you the complete, addictive core story, while the supplementary novels let you linger in that world a little longer. I found that going through Landon's story after the emotional intensity of 'After Ever Happy' was a nice palate cleanser, offering a gentler kind of romance.
