Make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into before you sync your Kindle to Goodreads, because by enabling this feature you’ll be sharing your reading progress (and, thus, your reading habits and how fast you read) with Amazon’s social platform. This means that, in addition to being able to see your own progress, your friends list will be able to see when you’re reading a certain book. Goodreads has a lot of privacy settings for things like this, but they can be very granular and sort of confusing. So, my take is that, if you do end up enabling this, you should go into your Goodreads privacy settings and see who can see your updates. If you’re not really into the social part of Goodreads, you might even want to set your reading activity to “Only Me”. The convenience of having your Kindle update your Goodreads account automatically is not worth sharing every single page turn with the world unless you’re really into that sort of thing.

I celebrate the export of my annual list of reads as if it were a digital holiday. After each year, I haul out my laptop, brew a cup of coffee and go through all the steps to get my data out. There’s a moment of切り替え or ‘-switching’ as I click the button to ‘export to CSV’ that feels like sending off a letter into the void. It takes a few days or even weeks to arrive in the form of an email which I then download as a .CSV file. Unpacking the CSV in Excel and/or constructing charts and/or making long lists to review my year of reading is more fun than Goodreads could ever provide for me in the way of reviewing the year that has passed. The few steps involved in manually exporting my reading data adds to the ‘occasion’-like feeling of going through them. Reclaiming one’s data, even in this rather basic form, is no mean feat.

I ran into this issue a while back and found a few tricks that worked for me. The first thing I did was manually sync my Kindle by going to the settings and selecting 'Sync My Kindle.' Sometimes the automatic sync doesn’t kick in, and this forces it. If that doesn’t work, I disconnected and reconnected my Goodreads account under the Kindle’s Goodreads settings. Another thing that helped was clearing the cache on the Kindle by holding the power button for 40 seconds until it restarts. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it often resolves the glitch. Lastly, I made sure both my Kindle and Goodreads app were updated to the latest versions, as outdated software can cause these kinds of issues. If none of these work, contacting Amazon support might be the next step, but I haven’t had to go that far yet.

I think this feature is meant for passive tracking of books, i.e. Goodreads doesn’t broadcast a public update every time you read a page. Instead, it updates the progress percentage for the book you’re currently reading on your Goodreads ‘currently reading’ shelf. It’s a quiet, background sync feature for your personal tracking needs on Goodreads, not a feature to add to a newsfeed of updates from your friends.

I rely quite heavily on Goodreads for free eBooks. One trick that has worked for me is being creative with my searches. For example, searching for “free m-m romance” on Goodreads and then filtering the results by “Lists” can bring up dozens of lists created by other users that feature free eBooks of m-m romance. There are also lots of blogs and social media accounts that specialize in LGBTQ+ literature and so often post about free eBooks that can be downloaded from Goodreads, and I also follow the “MM Romance Readers” group on Goodreads because they often post about eBooks that are currently free for a limited time.
Many authors combine for the release of free anthologies and box sets to receive exposure for their written work. These are easily found on Goodreads, and can also be a really great way to read some of the latest literature, finding new authors that you may have otherwise never come across. There are also many classics that can be downloaded from Project Gutenberg for free. However, it’s worth noting that many of the classic novels that are available to download for free are likely to be far from modern m-m romance. Even so, many authors now run giveaways and offer free copies of their novels to subscribers of their newsletters via Goodreads in order to gain exposure for their work. With a bit of looking around, it is easy to find some really great free m-m novels to read.

I recently figured out how to stop Goodreads from updating my reading status on Kindle, and it was simpler than I expected. On your Kindle, go to the settings menu and look for the 'Goodreads Integration' option. Toggle it off to disable automatic updates. If you want to be extra cautious, you can also revoke Kindle's access to Goodreads by logging into your Amazon account, navigating to 'Manage Your Content and Devices,' and adjusting the permissions there. This way, your reading progress won’t be shared without your consent. It’s a relief for those of us who prefer to keep our reading habits private or just don’t like the constant notifications.

I would say it is a clear yes. I have been a KU subscriber for years and re-borrow hundreds of titles. Most of the time I re-borrow titles to continue a series that I have started. For example, I will read a trilogy and return all three books. A year later the fourth book in the series is released and I re-borrow the first three books in the series to re-read them before continuing with the fourth book. The system has never flagged me or returned an error. Amazon wants you to engage with the catalog and re-reading old favorites to continue your subscription is just fine. There is no secret rule against re-borrowing old titles. I would recommend re-borrowing without fear. It is one of the most reliable aspects of the KU experience.

So my go to litmus test for a new book are reviews from trusted friends. Aggregating all reviews via some algorithm is basically useless to me. I’ve read highly rated “The Fake Mate” by Lana Ferguson. It’s an omegaverse light story set in a hospital which is completely foreign to me, but apparently works. This is a very steamy, funny book with a protective, grumpy hero.
It’s manages to walk a fine line between good tropes and new original ideas. For the most part it succeeds in being a great read, a fake relationship to silence office gossip that has a great twist of werewolf biology. If you’re looking for something with a paranormal twist but written with a really contemporary feel then this one deserves its high ratings.

Indirect indeed. To access your online reading history go to Amazon.com, log in to your account and go to account settings (top right of the page). From there click on Manage Your Content and Devices. From there click on the ‘Content’ tab on the right hand side of the page and select Books from the drop-down list at the top of the page. Most books are listed in chronological order. You can search for specific books in the list but it can sometimes be helpful to scan through the list of books you’ve downloaded in case you remember reading part of a book but didn’t finish it. Occasionally it’s helpful to ‘tidy up’ your list and remove samples of books as well as those that you know you’ll never read.

A Thriller! At first glance Michael Connelly’s novel “The Lincoln Lawyer” seems to be more of a legal drama but in Goodreads ratings it is categorized as a Thriller. It is a great Thriller story because of the cat-and-mouse game between Mickey Haller, a defense attorney, and his very evil client. The procedural details of the story are very interesting and there is a very good “franchise” twist in the plot.
Connelly creates a tough, mobile world when Mickey Haller practices law out of the back of his car. It is well-written, lean and highly realistic. This is not a ‘suspense’ novel in the sense of a lot of jump-scared-type scenes. Rather, it is a slow developing dread at what has been going on and how he was manipulated, followed by the intricacies of the law as Haller searches for a way out of the trap set for him.
