'One's Company' is a wistfully charismatic novel, centered on the lone wahine Bonnie who wins the lottery and promptly goes on a round-the-world spending spree re-creating a TV sitcom set as her very own private fantasy world. But all she has for company on her vast, empty stage are the three figures of her imagination - and they are so vividly realized that they become in effect a second cast of 'Three’s Company': Jack, the amiable landlord; Janet, the sensible female other half; and Chrissy, the wispy, giggling blonde. It’s a tricky thing, this, and writer gives it due sense of both pathos and coziness as a lonely woman’s rag-worn security-blanket of nostalgia.

I just finished One’s Company by Ilene Frank and it was a really quirky and introverted novel. It followed the life of Bonnie Lincoln, a woman who after winning the lottery decided to spend her days recreating the set of her favorite TV show in a remote mountain setting. Bonnie is not your average protagonist and her love of Three’s Company is bordering on the obsessive. However, for Bonnie, the show is a means of escaping from her very traumatic past. The author had obviously done a lot of research into the show and the novel contains lots of details about the set and even the canned laughter that they used in TV shows.

The ‘characters’ are all from the TV show that she loves so much. Jack, Janet and Chrissy are as real as Bonnie can get to in her world of isolation and she converses with them as if they were real. So real in fact that they become the driving force behind the rest of the novel. You are able to understand how Bonnie’s mind is working and how she uses her love of the show to block out her past in order to try and come to terms with her loss. The characters, real or imagined, are wonderful and the author brings them to life in such a way that they are unforgettable.

I have so much love for fictional crushes this year and Blake from ‘The Lucky List’ might just be my favorite. His constant grin and encouragement to Emily to live life to the full hides a vulnerability that really draws you in. Emily is relatable, awkward, still grieving from the loss of her Mum but also finding bravery in the smallest of things. There are some really great supporting characters too, like Ginny who tells it how it really is, and the subtle but powerful change in Emily’s Dad as he comes to terms with things and finds a way of communicating with Emily better.
