The author isn't afraid to let them be unlikable during the process. They backslide, say petty things, make selfish choices. This realism makes the sweeter moments shine brighter. When he finally does something genuinely selfless, it hits hard because you've seen him be a jerk for so long. The evolution isn't a sanitized, perfect progression. It's messy, with apologies needed on both sides. This imperfection makes the final connection feel human and durable, not like a fantasy constructed for reader wish-fulfillment. You believe these two specific, flawed people could actually make it work.
