Seraphina Salazar
I gripped my pen tighter as the folder I had just handed to my boss slammed into my face. “This is wrong! How many times do I have to tell you this?” he shouted angrily. He massaged his temples, then glared sharply at me. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing, Ms. Salazar?” he added insultingly. I pressed my lips together and inhaled, trying to stop myself from saying insults. And you? Do you even know what you’re doing? You stupid! Damn it! All you do is sit there! I didn’t know how many times I cursed him in my head. God! It was so tempting to say something insulting! But of course, he is my boss, and I need this job, so I have to restrain myself! Three months ago, I was hired as an assistant project manager. I performed well, and my supervisor was impressed. He decided to entrust me with a project to handle on my own. Unfortunately, I still had no idea why my boss was always so irritated. I lowered my head and apologized. “I’m sorry, Sir. I’ll do it again…” This wasn’t the first time he had gotten mad at me. It had happened many times before. I remembered that I couldn’t stop myself from crying the first time he yelled at me. And he was so happy and delighted seeing me so terrified. I heard him laugh mockingly. I lifted my gaze to see him raising an eyebrow. “Your boss says you’re good at your job, huh.” He looked me over from head to toe and then smirked. “Maybe the reason he says you’re good is because you’re… doing something else…” he said suggestively. He didn’t finish his sentence, but from the grin on his lips, I knew exactly what he meant—that maybe I was seducing my boss into bed, which was why he was so impressed with me. I gritted my teeth in annoyance. I gripped my pen tighter—it was almost going to snap. I know I am attractive! But I would never use my body to impress my boss! I have skills! He just couldn't see it! “I was just really doing my job with all my effort, Sir, that’s why my boss was impressed…” I said softly, keeping my head down. He didn’t say anything for a few seconds, so I lifted my gaze at him. He was holding his phone and reading something on it. I noticed the smile on his face as he read. A few seconds later, he noticed I was staring at him. His expression darkened. The corner of his lips curl before he spoke. “Why are you still here? Get out, you stupid, useless employee!” he growled. I immediately knelt and picked up the scattered papers. He had made sure they fell everywhere because he removed the clip I had put on the folder before throwing it at me. “Faster!” he shouted. The first paper I picked up crumpled under my tight grip. Once I gathered everything, I stood up immediately. “I’m really sorry, Sir…” I apologized again. “I’ll do it again.” I bowed slightly before stepping back and quickly leaving. I forced a fake smile as I left the office. Good thing I did because a colleague saw me as soon as I stepped out. “You have a big smile! Does that mean your work got approved?” she teased. My heart skipped a beat. I didn’t answer and just smiled more. I walked faster than her to avoid speaking. “As expected from a top performer,” she added, praising me, before I could finally get away. I sank weakly into my chair. I quickly turned on my computer and opened the file for my current project. The thing is, no matter how much I review it, I don't know what's wrong with it. This is already my seventh revision. I don't know how to fix it anymore. I’ve put so many ideas into it already. I’ve even collected additional ideas just to get it approve. But why is it still wrong? He never told me where I was wrong. He would only insult my work without saying what exactly was wrong. Time slipped away without me noticing. I wanted to cry from frustration. I wanted a break, but my salary was everything to me right now. Giving up was not an option. When I couldn’t take it anymore, I went to the restroom to release my frustration. I cried silently, making sure no one could hear me. And when I was returning to my table, I stopped in the hallway just as I was about to turn toward our wing. "Ms. Salazar is a great employee. She's still a beginner but has already proven herself,” I heard my supervisor say. Then I heard a mocking laugh. I knew it was from Sir Alaric. “Hmm…I wonder why she was competent under you… but suddenly useless under me,” he said suggestively. *** “Seraphina, we’re going to a bar later. You’re coming, right?” Sara whispered to me. I was staring at my computer when she suddenly called me. I looked at her absentmindedly. A bar? I hadn’t been to one in a long time. I found myself nodding, thinking maybe I could forget my problems if I went with them. “Sure,” I said, pretending to be cheerful. When we arrived, there were already a lot of people in the bar. I quickly went to the counter and ordered a drink. Some of my colleagues shouted teasingly at me because of it. “Hey… take it easy, Seraphina. We just got here,” Sara said laughing. I chuckled. “That’s why we’re here—to party, right?” I said, taking a sip of the drink the bartender handed me. After we found a spot, they ordered their drinks. After a while, I noticed my colleagues were talking about something, but I couldn’t quite understand. Lina even called me, but I didn’t catch what she said. “What? I can’t hear you,” I laughed at Sara because she repeated what Lina had said. She came closer to my seat and pointed something far away from us. I looked where she was pointing. I saw Alaric, a little distance away. He was with two other men. A woman was standing in front of him, talking to him. I glared at him from a distance. “Your boss is so handsome, Seraphina. We get so jealous every time he calls you to his office because you get to be alone with him,” she said, giggling. I immediately grabbed my drink and gulped it down. “Looks like Seraphina wants to get drunk,” Basty teased. I pretended to laugh before turning my gaze back to my boss. He was flirting with the woman he was talking to. I figured he probably wouldn’t belittle me here—after all, we weren’t in the office. As I kept watching, he suddenly turned his gaze toward us. His eyes darkened as he stared at me, and it made me uneasy. The girl with him tried to get his attention, but he ignored her. I lip-read his lips when he mouthed, ‘Seraphina,’ while brushing his lower lip with his finger. I immediately looked away. …“Alaric, you shouldn't be here,” I said nervously. But it was like he didn’t hear me at all. He closed the door to my room and walked toward me.I took a deep breath. I was already struggling to breathe because of how nervous I was. I don’t know. He hadn’t really done anything to me. I was just scared that what happened yesterday might happen again today. That he might hurt me too because I’m a Salazar.I stopped when the back of my legs hit the bed. A second later, Alaric was already standing right in front of me. He was scowling, his eyes bloodshot. Anyone would be scared seeing him like that because it was obvious he was furious.“Why didn't you answer your phone?” he asked coldly. His breath hit my face, making me lower my head immediately to avoid his eyes.“I was busy… sorry.” My voice trembled. I took another deep breath, already running out of air again.“And you're busy now too?” I could hear the anger in his voice. “Doing what?” He let out a dark chuckle. “You’re not even do
I stayed frozen in the restroom for several minutes while Serenity kept asking if I knew those girls or why they hurt me.I just stared at her, unable to answer. What was I supposed to say? That they pulled my hair just because they found out I’m a Salazar? That would only make her think it’s connected to what happened in the past. And I’m not even sure if it really is.I want to be sure first before I tell them… or maybe I won’t tell them at all. It will only make my family more afraid. We’re just starting to be okay. I don’t want to be the reason everything falls apart again.Serenity and I went home after what happened. We didn’t go back to our table anymore. I just texted Sara that we had to leave because of an emergency.“Serenity, I don’t know, okay? I don’t know them, and I don’t know why they hurt me!” I stopped and shut my eyes tightly. “I didn’t do anything to them. They just did it out of nowhere.”Serenity finally stopped asking and leaned back against the taxi seat. We we
I stepped back when one of the unfamiliar women moved forward.“You sure she’s a Salazar?” the woman asked in a condescending tone as she approached me. She looked me up and down, her brows furrowing.“Daphne, I know what I’m saying,” Analise answered calmly. “Alaric himself said that girl is a Salazar.”The one Analise called Daphne let out a laugh. “If Alaric knows she’s a Salazar, don’t you think she already suffered because of him?” she said, raising a brow at me. “What do you think, Analise?”Daphne stopped right in front of me and lightly slapped my face twice. “You have a pretty face for a Salazar.”Another girl laughed—the one beside Analise. Meanwhile, Analise just stared at me sharply.“Probably… but that doesn’t mean we can’t be mean to her. After all… she is a Salazar. This is our chance to finally do something,” the girl beside Analise said.I turned my face away when Daphne slapped me again. The other girl laughed at what she did before walking closer too. I stepped back
We got home at dawn, Jessica and I. We even had dinner before Tita Margaux allowed us to leave. I feel like everything happened so fast. Jessica and Tita got along quickly. I’m not seeing it as something bad. I just hope she’s doing it with pure intentions. Because Tita Margaux is really kind to everyone.Jessica happily waved at me as she got off the pedicab. I waved back before telling the driver to keep going. Magnus was supposed to take us home, but he suddenly left because of an emergency with his dad. He had to go immediately, so we just commuted home. When I got home, I was already tired so I fell asleep right away. That’s why I only saw Alaric’s missed calls the next day. He had three texts.[It’s alright.]His reply to my message saying I couldn’t go when he offered to pick me up.[Answer my call.]This was his next text when I ignored his call because I was already inside Magnus’ house.[Answer your damn phone.]That was his last text.My eyes widened when I read that. I had
We all got out of the car when we arrived at Magnus’ house. It was still the same, but I noticed a small change. We were about to go inside when my phone suddenly vibrated. I stopped walking. Neither Magnus nor Jessica noticed, so I was left behind. When I checked my phone, I saw Alaric was calling. Damn! I completely forgot about my mission. I was supposed to find out if the Ferrers were the enemy of my family! And I’m here at Magnus’ house! He doesn’t want me meeting Magnus!I answered the call when I saw Magnus and Jessica already go inside.“Hello…” I greeted. I could feel my chest beating faster from nervousness.“Where are you? You’re not replying to my texts,” he asked in a low voice.I shifted. “I’m at Aunt’s place. I spent the whole day with my cousin at work, so I couldn’t check my phone.”He sighed, and I noticed the annoyance in it. “But that shouldn’t be the reason why you’re forgetting about your boyfriend, Seraphina.”I rolled my eyes. “I didn’t forget you!”“Really? No
I was really shocked by what I found out. I never thought this was how they saw their lives. Before, everything was fine. Yes, Magnus and his parents were a big help to us, but Aunt was never jealous before. They knew how much the Zarcenos helped us, and they never showed any envy. Only now. Well, I don’t want to see it that way. Maybe they just want to get closer to the Zarcenos too, so they have someone to rely on when problems come.Even though I felt uncomfortable with what I learned, I couldn’t leave Jessica. This was the first time she cried in front of me, and I just couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye. So instead, I accompanied her to work while explaining that my life isn’t really that good either.“You can’t say that. You only struggled when you suddenly broke up with Magnus. And after almost a year, you got a job. Now your dad is working again.”I pressed my lips together. I couldn’t argue with her because, in some way, she was right. But we still struggled.“But us, couz,
Alaric immediately rushed to me. I couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst into tears. Maybe because of the pressure and the pain in my right hand. Even more when I saw him approach me with anger written all over his face.“You couldn’t even do a small thing without causing trouble,” he said irritabl
The next morning, if Serenity hadn’t woken me up, I wouldn’t have woken up at all. Mom hadn’t planned on waking me, so Serenity did instead. It was strange—on days she doesn’t have school, she usually wakes up at noon. But today, she was up early.“Sis, don’t forget to send me the pictures,” Sereni
I moaned when I felt Alaric’s hand on my legs, almost brushing my private part. I jolted when I felt his other hand slip inside my T-shirt.“Alaric, please…” I said, even though I didn’t know why. I barely recognized my own voice—it sounded so sensual. He groaned. His lips returned to mine, kissing
I felt nervous at what Alaric said. I was starting to breathe heavily when he suddenly let out a bark of laughter. That was when I realized he was just messing with me.I rolled my eyes in annoyance and left him. There were two rooms inside the suite. No wonder he was fine with us sharing one room—
