For a middle-grade/YA bridge with strong romantic elements, 'Howl’s Moving Castle' by Diana Wynne Jones. Sophie Hatter, under a witch’s curse that turns her into an old woman, stops caring about propriety and becomes wonderfully outspoken and daring.
Her independence is her newfound freedom from society’s expectations. She barges into Howl’s castle, takes charge of cleaning, negotiates with fire demons, and ultimately solves everyone’s problems through sheer stubbornness and kindness. The romance with the vain wizard Howl is chaotic and delightful because she sees right through him and isn’t impressed by his magic.
This is a great question because it separates wish-fulfillment from character depth. A lot of ‘strong’ heroines are just given a sword and a sarcastic quip. Real independence is about having choices and making them, even when they’re hard.
That’s why 'The Night Circus' by Erin Morgenstern, while not a romance-centric plot, has Celia Bowen. Her entire life is a duel of magic, bound by her father’s cruel design. Her independence is her struggle to find a way to love within the constraints of a game she never chose, ultimately trying to rewrite the rules themselves. Her choices define the fate of the circus.
I’m just here to say that ‘independent’ shouldn’t mean ‘emotionally cold’ or ‘incapable of vulnerability’. The best characters balance strength with genuine connection. That nuance is what makes them feel real and their relationships worth rooting for.
Here’s an offbeat one: 'The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep' by H.G. Parry. The main character, Charley, can read literary characters to life. His brother Rob is the more ‘practical’ one. The true independent force, though, is the character of Dorian Gray, who is brought to life and seeks his own destiny.
While not the heroine in a traditional sense, the way the narrative plays with agency, especially for a character ripped from a book who fights for his own story, is fascinating. The romantic elements are subtle, but the themes of self-definition are strong.

After six years together, Hansel Johnson comes to Miranda Sutton with an arm around his new lover and tells her he wants to break up.
Miranda doesn't kick up a fuss. She packs her things, takes the exorbitant sum of money he gives her as compensation, and moves out without hesitation.
Hansel's friends make bets on how long Miranda can stick it out this time—everyone in Jandersville knows that Miranda is madly in love with Hansel, after all. She loves him so much that she can cast aside her pride, dignity, and temper. They're sure she'll come begging for him to take her back in three days, at most.
But when three days come and go… Hansel's the first to lose his composure. It's his first time giving in to Miranda. He calls her and says, "Have you had enough of this nonsense? If you have, you'd better come back."
Unfortunately for him, he only hears a man chuckle on the other end of the line. "It's too late to change something once it's done, Mr. Johnson. There isn't anything in this world that can turn back time."
"I'm looking for Miranda. Pass the phone to her!" Hansel snaps.
"Sorry, but my girlfriend's too tired. She's just fallen asleep."
