I read them based on which covers I liked best from the used book bin. This led to a chaotic but delightful journey. The Fontana paperbacks from the 70s have the best artwork. 'Death at the Bar' has a fantastic, moody painting. Judge a book by its cover, I say! It hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Don't forget about the short story collections! 'The Collected Short Fiction of Ngaio Marsh' is wonderful, but I'd save it for after you've met the characters properly. Some stories are little snapshots that hit better when you already know Alleyn's voice and methods.

The sheer Englishness of it all is part of the charm. If you crave that interwar and post-war British atmosphere, publication order immerses you in its gradual change. You feel the social shifts from book to book. Starting in the middle gives you a snapshot, but the sequence gives you a panorama.

Can we talk about how good the titles are? 'Death and the Dancing Footman,' 'Night at the Vulcan,' 'Final Curtain.' Sometimes I just pick based on which title sounds the most intriguing that day. There's no wrong door into her world of murder. Each one promises a specific, crafted atmosphere.

For a purely practical take, the early books can be harder to find in print. 'A Man Lay Dead' is usually available, but some of the immediate follow-ups might require hunting. Don't let that stop you. Used book sites are your friend. The hunt is part of the fun for a vintage mystery fan.

What Ngaio Marsh book should Golden Age crime fans read first?

I always recommend 'Last Ditch' to people who might find earlier Golden Age prose a tad stiff. It’s from the 1970s and features Alleyn’s son, Ricky, as an amateur sleuth. The tone is younger, fresher, and more contemporary, with a mystery involving drug smuggling in a Channel Islands setting. It’s a fun, breezy read that still has the Marsh hallmarks of a clever plot and well-drawn characters. It shows the evolution of the genre within her own work. If you want a bridge between classic and more modern mystery sensibilities, this is a painless and enjoyable place to start that might lead you back to her earlier, more traditional works.
