I’ve recently started a weekend routine of searching various legal platforms for mature BL shows with raw content. Since most platforms block links to such content, I have to search each one individually. I start with Crunchyroll since they have a large and searchable anime library with most titles having subtitles. I’d put my money at zero percent for Disney+ to host a mature BL anime, but this would be so funny given their usual family friendly brand. They already have a few shoujo titles available on the service, but I couldn’t see them giving a mature-rated title a home. It kind of shows how divided the market currently is for streaming anime: ‘family’ (Disney+, Netflix to some extent), ‘general anime’ (Crunchyroll, HIDIVE), and then ‘adult’ – a category which doesn’t really currently exist for anime and thus is generally not marketed. Until there’s a service which explicitly sets up an ‘Adult Anime’ or ‘Mature Romance’ section and markets them accordingly, these titles will continue to be awkwardly listed under the umbrella of ‘Boys Love’ within the general anime offerings of services such as those listed above.

For older OVAs which have not been licensed for wide release on streaming, I search for them on Amazon Video, Google Play and Microsoft Movies & TV store (where available). My suggestion to finding BL on various platforms would be to not rely solely on a title’s genre filter and to use such external resources as MyAnimeList or AniList. By searching for the title of a known BL anime on either of these sites the resulting page for the title should list the various “streaming platforms” where said title is available for legal streaming. I follow several bloggers and reviewers on social media who specialize in BL anime. They are excellent resources for keeping up to date on newly acquired titles as well as titles that have recently become available for streaming on various platforms. This is because the official platform sites rarely announce newly acquired titles of the BL genre to their users. We have to build our own information networks in order to receive adequate curation of the various BL titles being acquired and made available for streaming on said platforms.
