An English Writer

An English Writer

The novel is mainly about the forgotten British poet/writer named C. J Richards who lived in Burma/Myanmar in colonial times and he believed himself as a Burmophile. He served as I.C.S (Indian Civil Servant) and when he retired from I.C.S service, he was a D.C (District Commissioner) and he left for England a year before Burma gained its independence in 1948. He came to Burma in 1920 to work in civil service after passing the hardest I.C.S examination. He wrote several books on Burma and contributed many monthly articles to Guardian Magazine published in Burma from 1953 to 1974 or 1975. Though he wrote several books which had much literary merit to both communities, Britain and Burma (Myanmar), people failed to recognize him. The story has two parts: one part is set in the contemporary Yangon (then called Rangoon) in 2016 context and a young literary enthusiast named “Lin” found out unexpectedly the forgotten writer’s poetry book and there is surely a good deal of time gap that led him into a quest to know more about the author’s life. The setting is quite different comparing to colonial Burma and independence Myanmar (Burma), early twentieth century and 2016 which is a transitional period in Myanmar. The writer’s life is fictionalized in the novel and most of the facts are taken from his personal stories and other reference books. It is a kind of historical novel with a twist and it has comparatively constructed the two different periods in Myanmar history to convince readers, locally and abroad more about history, authorship, humanity, colonialism, and transitional development in Myanmar today.

Which best English novels ever are ideal for improving English skills?

I find that post-colonial literature offers a rich, nuanced use of English that often plays with and subverts the language. Authors like Chinua Achebe ('Things Fall Apart') or Arundhati Roy ('The God of Small Things') write in English but infuse it with the rhythms and perspectives of their own cultures. You get exposed to different sentence cadences and metaphors. It expands your idea of what English can be and teaches you about context and history in a profound way.

Which novels to read to improve spoken English for beginners?

Okay, I've been where you are. My advice? Ditch the dense classics for now. They're full of 'thou' and 'alas' and won't help you order a coffee. I got way more from reading modern, dialogue-heavy chapter books. The 'Magic Tree House' series was my gateway—simple sentences, lots of conversations, and you pick up practical vocabulary about history and science without realizing it. I kept a notebook just for phrases I could imagine myself saying.

Roald Dahl is another winner. 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Matilda' are playful, the dialogue snaps, and the humor translates. Reading his stuff out loud made my mouth get used to the rhythms. Audiobooks narrated by the author are the real cheat code here—you hear the cadence while seeing the words. Just pick something you're genuinely curious about, not what you think you 'should' read. The goal is to make your brain want to engage, not to slog through a Victorian doorstop.

What novels to read to improve spoken English fast?

Looking for books to sharpen spoken English introduces a whole different filter than regular reading. Forget dense classics for now; they’re full of archaic phrasing nobody uses in conversation. Instead, I'd lean towards contemporary realistic fiction set in modern-day US or UK, especially genres like YA or romance where dialogue drives the plot. Something like 'Normal People' by Sally Rooney is packed with natural, hesitant, back-and-forth speech. Audiobooks narrated by actors with clear, standard accents are a game-changer here—listening while reading along can cement how words connect in rapid speech.

Another angle is short stories or even well-written fanfiction for popular TV shows; the language often mirrors casual TV dialogue, which is closer to everyday talk. The goal isn't literary merit but exposure to idioms, contractions, and sentence rhythm. I’d avoid heavy sci-fi or fantasy with invented slang initially. Reading playscripts aloud can also be surprisingly effective; you’re forced to voice the punctuation and pacing. It feels awkward at first, but your mouth gets used to forming the phrases.
