What Is The Plot Of Resume Manhwa About?

A sweet find for fans of dark humor mixed with existential horror: ‘Resume’ by Kim Torijean follows the doldrums of a man stuck in a go-nowhere job, under the daily harassment of his disapproving boss. But at a company party, in passing he knocks over a file of resumes on the floor, and then — — one night he is returned to his apartment, to find that suddenly he is other people, all of great skill at their jobs. A brilliant programmer. An influential social-media guru. Each iteration brings a fresh pop of shock and delight. And so it goes on for a while, the author presenting to us a fairly credible 2D representation of the addictive, corrosive and all-consuming transformation of this ordinary guy into superhero and diabolical monster, bit by bit. In ‘edit’ mode for his life, each redesign strips something away from him in real life. His side characters begin to notice things are amiss with him. He becomes more and more slavishly dependent upon the resume. All in all, then, a dark, odd, great shreds-of-humor-of-dying tale of corporeal disintegration by relentless Design, where increasingly grotesque deformation of the already repulsive greys of the fellow’s flesh here is augmented by uncomfortable distortions of space and perspective within the overall arrangement of the two-dimensional artwork (every panel is drawn in a somber, monochrome color, a most appropriate and effective dark-tragedy-of-the-supernatural paradigm for these pages), until, as in Oscar Wilde’s wry and classic horror story The Picture of Dorian Gray (its subject, lest we forget, a doyo’s dandyo Mark McGwire), this fellow finally in the end is by his Design completely, utterly, and without remainder, annihilated. I read this in one sitting. A great, cold find.
