Something I haven't seen mentioned much is the theme of home and displacement. So much historical fiction is about journeys, exiles, migrations, and invasions. Characters are torn from their homes and must find or build a new one, or they fight desperately to protect a homeland that's changing beyond recognition. This theme of belonging and rootlessness resonates deeply in our own globalized, often displaced world.
It ties into ideas of identity: are you defined by your birthplace, your bloodline, your language, or your choices? Historical settings throw these questions into sharp relief, as characters navigate worlds where such categories were often rigid and violently enforced.

I keep coming back to the idea of scale. Best sellers often master the balance between the intimate and the epic. The theme is the individual versus the tide of history. Can one person's love, faith, or courage actually matter when armies are marching and empires are falling? The best books argue yes, but in complicated ways. Their actions might not change the broad outcome, but they change everything for the people around them.
That tension—between the insignificant human and the colossal march of time—is the heartbeat of the genre. It's why we care about a single midwife in plague-ridden London or a foot soldier at Waterloo. Their stories affirm that even in the face of vast historical forces, individual lives have meaning and their choices echo in ways seen and unseen.

For me, the theme is always connection. These books build a bridge between 'then' and 'now.' They show that while the costumes and technology change, the core human emotions—love, grief, ambition, fear—are timeless. A great historical novel makes you realize the people in the past weren't just names in a textbook; they were as complex and contradictory as anyone alive today. That moment of connection, of seeing yourself in a Viking warrior or a medieval nun, is the magic trick.
Best sellers are masterful at finding those timeless emotional through-lines and weaving them into the specific, rich detail of the period. The setting becomes a character, but the heart is always recognizably human.

Sometimes the theme is just myth-making. Taking a well-known figure or event and fleshing it out with human motivation, private doubts, and personal struggles. The shared theme is the demystification (or sometimes remystification) of history. It asks: what was Achilles really like when he wasn't fighting? What private fears did Queen Elizabeth I harbor? It satisfies our voyeuristic curiosity about the inner lives of the famous and infamous.
It turns monuments back into people, with all their flaws, passions, and contradictions. This process of humanizing icons is endlessly fascinating because it bridges the gap between the legendary figures of our textbooks and our own messy human experiences.

Can anyone actually define 'best-selling' in a meaningful way for this? Is it a literary prize winner that sells steadily for decades, or a supermarket paperback that tops the charts for one summer? The themes might differ. The former might delve into profound moral ambiguity and the weight of history, while the latter might prioritize romance, adventure, and clear-cut heroes and villains. Both are valid, but they're playing different games with the genre.

When desire takes over, can love truly follow?
Lila Carrington gets the most shocking news from her father at dinner one day, and all he said was a decree that she has to follow through with even though she has her own
reservations—she was supposed to tie the knot with Levi Beaumont. The Carrington and Beaumont families have been enemies for decades, and truthfully none of them know the real reason behind the fight because each person seems to have their own side to the story, so Lila did not understand the reason that her father, who taught her never to associate herself with the Beaumont family, was the same one pushing her into marriage with one of them.
Levi did not want the relationship either, but the families had to form an alliance so they could both remain in business. It had to be done. Driven with the passion to stay in business, Lila and Levi help their family out, but with the promise to their parents that it would only last a year and they would be done.
What happens when they begin to fall for each other?
Do the Carringtons and the Beaumonts reunite, or does a war happen?

Evelyn "Evie" Moretti never wanted to be part of the mafia world. The daughter of a disgraced underboss, she’s spent her life dreaming of freedom—a life far away from the violence and betrayal that destroyed her family. But when her father’s debts to the powerful Romano crime family spiral out of control, Evie is forced to pay the price: an arranged marriage to Don Alessandro "Alessio" Romano, the ruthless and enigmatic head of the Romano family.
Alessio is as cold as he is handsome, a man shrouded in darkness and driven by a thirst for revenge. From the moment Evie meets him, it’s clear that their marriage is no love story. It’s a transaction, a way to settle a debt and secure power. But as Evie is thrust into Alessio’s world of luxury, danger, and deceit, she begins to realize that there’s more to their union than meets the eye. Alessio harbours a deep hatred for her family, and his cruelty toward her is both calculated and personal.
As Evie struggles to survive in her new life, she uncovers shocking secrets about her family’s past—and Alessio’s true motives for marrying her. Betrayed at every turn, she must navigate a treacherous web of lies, power struggles, and forbidden desires. But the more she learns, the more she questions who she can trust—and whether she can resist the dangerous pull of the man who holds her captive in every way.
Bound by Blood and Betrayal is a dark, emotional mafia romance filled with twists, tension, and a love that burns as fiercely as it destroys. Can Evie find a way to escape Alessio’s grip, or will she lose herself in the shadows of his world?
Many share a focus on survival in its rawest form. Not just physical survival through famine or war, but the survival of ideas, love, or integrity in a world designed to crush them. That primal stake is universal.
Grief and how people carry it. The process of living after a loss, not just getting over it. The most moving bestsellers show grief as a transformation, a weight, and sometimes a source of strength, which is far more realistic and compelling than simple closure.
Truth is subjective and perspective is everything. The multi-POV boom isn't an accident. Bestsellers often explore how the same events look completely different from another angle, challenging the reader's assumptions. The theme becomes the search for a synthesis, or an acceptance that a single, objective truth might be impossible to grasp.
The theme of witness. Not the detective, but the peripheral person who sees something, knows something, and must decide whether to come forward. Their fear, their moral calculus, their risk—that's a hugely relatable through-line. It puts the reader in the shoes of an ordinary person caught in an extraordinary situation, which is often more gripping than following the professional who signed up for it.
A journey of self-discovery disguised as an external adventure. The character starts with a flawed self-perception—'I'm a coward,' 'I'm unremarkable,' 'I'm alone'—and the plot forces them to prove themselves wrong. The quest isn't really about the MacGuffin; it's about the person they become while searching for it. You see it in coming-of-age stories, sure, but also in mid-life crisis thrillers or senior-citizen adventures. The shared theme is transformation. The protagonist ends the book with a new understanding of their own strength, capacity for love, or place in the world. That arc is deeply satisfying.
