For 'How to Train Your Dragon' fanfiction, try looking on Archive of Our Own or FanFiction.net and using tags like 'Hiccup & Toothless' or 'Berk' to filter. A lot of the best stories expand on the dragon training concepts from the movies. If you enjoy that world-building, you might also like the original web novel 'The Dragon Thief', which follows a street urchin who discovers his stolen pet is actually a rare, intelligent dragon wanted by a corrupt empire. The dynamic between the clever thief and his misunderstood scaled companion is a lot of fun.

I'm enthusiast through and through. So I've gotten neck-deep in that universe's How to Train Your Dragon fanfiction (having written several myself).
Another choice is 'Let's Fly' - it gingerly commits the crime of setting up a premise where dragons are somehow kept as pets in everybody's home and Hiccup remains burdened with a wildly disobedient Night Fury.
And 'Standing Against, Standing Between' - I thought that it was particularly noticeable because of darker notes and its treatment of the harsh realities war is full sob stories that were just a brief point in original text only.
Or how about a crossover, 'The Dragon and The Avenger', where the artistically crafted blend of HTTYD universe with Marvel stories will charm you.

I tend to avoid fics that make Hiccup a 'Chosen One' in a grand, magical prophecy. It undercuts what I love about him—that he's an ordinary, scrawny kid who changed the world through empathy, curiosity, and engineering. Giving him a predestined fate removes his agency and the core message that anyone can be a hero. I've clicked out of so many stories that start with an ancient scroll foretelling the 'boy with the heart of a dragon'. I prefer his heroism to be earned, messy, and entirely his own. The mundane becoming extraordinary is the whole point.

Time travel fics are a weirdly specific niche that works surprisingly well. Hiccup-from-the-future goes back to the day he shot down Toothless, armed with all his knowledge and regret. Watching him try to fix everything without revealing his secret is a fantastic tension-builder. Does he save his mother sooner? Prevent battles? The emotional core is always his relationship with Toothless, and how it changes when one of them knows exactly how profound their bond will become. It's a great trope for exploring themes of destiny, forgiveness, and second chances.

I belong to that demographic of middle-aged mothers who occasionally dabble in fanfiction, and so 'How to Train Your Dragon' has an extra-special place in my heart.
There is a wealth of creativity to be found in this fandom. Two fanfics that I particularly like are 'Becoming Lífþrasir' and 'I Hear Him Scream'. In 'Becoming Lífþrasir', we see what happens when Hiccup is taken in by dragons and 'I Hear Him Scream' is a thrilling and emotional tale of Hiccup, Toothless switching bodies.
Both carry you along on a wild ride and both do this much-loved tale the justice it deserves.

How have I never sniffed your hair before?", the sniffing continued.
The sound reverberated through the caves, whilst she felt the vibrations on his chest where she lay, but she did not need that to know whose voice it belonged to. It was deep but not hoarse, somehow it was powerful and soothing at the same time, it was the voice of a god, one that had spoken to her all of these months, one she had replayed over again in her head till it was ingrained in her memory.
“Dragomir…”, she whispered in a teary voice, she proceeded to stand up but he held on to a part of her hair and was sniffing it.
When he noticed her staring at him, he stopped and stared back at her as if she had just caught him trying to steal from the cookie jar.
“Was that creepy?”, he asked.

especially those exploring Astrid and Hiccup's relationship. Their dynamic is so rich—from rivals to partners, and eventually lovers. One standout is 'To Soar Into the Sunset,' which dives into their post-'Hidden World' life, balancing duty and love. The author nails their banter and unspoken trust. Another gem is 'Ember in the Night,' a slow burn where Astrid helps Hiccup cope with losing Toothless. The emotional depth here is insane, with flashbacks to their teenage years woven in seamlessly.
For angst lovers, 'Wings of Steel' reimagines Astrid as a dragon rider earlier, forcing Hiccup to confront his feelings sooner. The tension is palpable, and the payoff is worth it. Shorter fics like 'Under Northern Lights' focus on intimate moments—quiet conversations under the aurora, revealing vulnerabilities. What ties these stories together is how they honor the characters’ growth while adding new layers to their bond.
I've read countless 'How to Train Your Dragon' fanfics, and Hiccup and Astrid’s relationship is a goldmine for exploration. Early fics often mirror the films, focusing on their slow-burn camaraderie—Astrid’s initial skepticism giving way to respect. But post-'HTTYD 2', writers dive deeper. Many stories amplify Astrid’s protective streak, especially when Hiccup’s chief duties weigh on him. Angst-heavy fics love to pit their stubbornness against each other, like when Hiccup prioritizes Berk over their bond.
Post-'HTTYD 3', separation arcs dominate. Some authors twist their reunion into a bittersweet dance of reconnection, while others invent scenarios where Astrid follows Hiccup into exile. My favorite trope is 'role reversal'—Astrid as chief, Hiccup as her advisor—forcing them to navigate power imbalances. Dragon-training scenes often become metaphors for their growth, with Toothless and Stormfly mirroring their synergy. The best fics make their love feel earned, not inevitable.
Astrid's loyalty to Hiccup in 'How to Train Your Dragon' fanfiction often starts as something rooted in skepticism, almost like a rivalry. Early stories capture her competitive spirit, where she’s constantly trying to outdo him, but there’s always this underlying respect. Over time, fanfics dive into how she begins to see his worth—not just as a dragon trainer but as a leader. The shift is subtle at first, maybe a moment where she defends his ideas to others or stands by him when the village doubts.
What really fascinates me is how authors explore her internal conflict. Loyalty isn’t just handed to Hiccup; it’s earned through shared battles, like when they face the Red Death or deal with Drago’s invasion. Some fics go deeper, showing Astrid wrestling with her own pride before fully committing to his side. The best ones make her loyalty feel like a choice, not just plot convenience. And when she finally says, 'I’ve got your back,' it hits harder because we’ve seen her struggle to get there.
