The dominance of certain tropes also reflects what sells outside of the core romance readership. The NYT list captures crossover appeal. A person who only reads one or two romances a year might gravitate towards the biggest, shiniest, most familiar concepts: the billionaire, the fake date, the royal. These tropes have cultural recognition. More nuanced or genre-bending tropes (like fantasy mating bonds or omegaverse) have massive followings within the romance community but have a steeper learning curve for casual readers. The list favors low-barrier-to-entry concepts with immediate wish-fulfillment appeal.

I think we're overlooking the 'caretaker' trope. It's often the heroine caring for the hero's orphaned niece/nephew or ailing relative, or vice versa. It instantly showcases nurturing qualities and creates a domestic setting for bonding. It's a softer, more subtle trope than billionaire or fake dating, but it's a steady presence. It ties into the fantasy of building a home and family together from a place of need and compassion. You see it a lot in small-town settings, where the community also acts as a collective caretaker, weaving the couple into its fabric.

The blurring of age categories is interesting. 'New Adult' (college-age/early 20s protagonists) emerged as a powerhouse, often dealing with themes of self-discovery and first major adult challenges. This carved out a space between YA and traditional adult romance. Now, we're also seeing more bestsellers featuring older protagonists—people in their 40s, 50s, and beyond, finding love the second (or third) time around. This expansion across the lifespan shows the genre acknowledging that the search for love and companionship isn't just for the young, broadening its appeal and reflecting its diverse readership.
One thing I've noticed is a strong push for diversity—not just racial, but also in ability, neurodiversity, and body type. Romances now often center characters who haven't historically been leads in mainstream publishing, and their experiences feel integral rather than token.
There's also a trend of blending genres, where a romance might have strong mystery or fantasy elements while still hitting the emotional beats. The focus on emotional authenticity is huge; characters deal with therapy, past trauma, and communication in a way that feels very contemporary.
