This relates to Hua Cheng in that Hua Cheng was rejected by the world (i.e. mortals) and thus became a ghost. Xie Lian was rejected by heaven and thus is an exiled god. Two outcasts found each other. His banishment is the reverse of Hua Cheng’s ascent to Supreme. Both men are outcasts who were rejected by their respective ‘homes’ because of their extreme devotion to the other man (Hua Cheng to Xie Lian’s devotion, Xie Lian to his ideals and then to Hua Cheng). This is masterful use of dramatic irony. We, as audience, are aware of jun’s sadness, his pain and his intentions. However, the Heavenly Court knows only what is reported to them by God – ‘God causes flood’, ‘God sends plague’, ‘God makes ally with Ghost King’. We weep at his banishments; no doubt the Heavenly Court administers justice as it sees fit. This disparity is at the heart of the story and conveys to us the injustice of a system which judges on appearance and end result, as opposed to knowing the truth about a person’s soul.

To put it simply, if this Heaven were to be a high school, then our hero Xie Lian was the star athlete who cheated on a test trying to help a friend out. After getting banished to a Reform School for misbehavior there too, he set the Chemistry lab on fire, unintentionally, in one of his returns. Returning for good this time, he even manages to get expelled for ‘conduct unbecoming’ from yet another school, as his behavior (or rather his presence) makes everyone – including the notorious drop out from the rival gang – very uncomfortable. His behavior is certainly weird enough, but it’s also the fact that he refuses to condone or even acknowledge the compromises that everyone else is making, that’s most uncomfortable to them.
