In spite of this, she insisted on her pursuit of happiness and, consequently, made genuine efforts to salvage the ill-conceived marriage, even as she recognized she was swimming against a proverbial tsunami. In addition, she was mute, complicating matters further.

Daniel, an unhappy CEO, also fell victim to the aforementioned forced marriage due to family pressure. He had to secure an heir for the Lawrence household and protect his business interests.
Whereas Lydia was generally kind and humble, Daniel was very haughty and prideful. He would often marginalize Lydia, refusing to acknowledge her true worth. Little did he know he would end up in a fierce battle to win her back.

The novel begins with an exhaustive description of Lydia's relationship with Daniel. The couple had a kid named Aidan, who was just learning to speak at that moment. The fact that she could not participate in her son's education made Lydia feel extremely saddened.
The couple lived in the Lawrence Residence until Aidan was born. The Lawrence family was exceedingly fond of Aidan but showed disdain towards the mother because, in their eyes, she cheated her way into Daniel's life.
In reality, the events leading up to the marriage were part of a ploy devised by Lydia's brother, who would do anything to get the Andrews family out of "debt prison." He arranged for Lydia and Daniel to sleep together and then went on to expose their intercourse to the press. Lydia subsequently got pregnant with Daniel's child, bringing disrepute to the Lawrence family and forcing Daniel to take her as his lawfully wedded wife.
Lydia was all but happy with this turn of events, but she caved into the pressure and accepted the marriage proposal.

It was evident that Lydia and Daniel's relationship, which started off already on the wrong foot, would not be "roses and candy" moving forward. Daniel was reluctant to see Lydia as anything other than his son's mother and would resort to extramarital affairs to satisfy his libido.
Lydia, knowing that the odds of winning Daniel's heart were close to none, decided to file for divorce. She accepted the fact she would never be Daniel's "exclusive bride," no matter what she did. After the divorce was settled, Daniel grew resentful of Lydia for what she did. At the same time, he'd start falling in love with her.
Two years after the fact, he met with her. Upon seeing her, he pushed her against the wall and, in a fit of rage, asked her why she abandoned him and their son (to her surprise).
