Theme

“The Billionaire’s Contract Pet” is, as said in our initial blurb, a Cinderella-like story with a “rags to riches” progression. However, similarities with the Italian folk tale abruptly end there, as we also get introduced to darker themes such as addiction and, to a lesser extent, prostitution.

In addition, the novel doesn’t hesitate to exploit the “Moment of Weakness” trope, as the female lead is close to selling her own body in exchange for much-needed money.

Characters

The main protagonists in “The Billionaire’s Contract Pet” are Emma and Will, and they’ll become our main focus for this section:

Emma

Emma is a college student who lived a relatively happy childhood, though her path into adulthood would be rather sour. After her mother died, she soon had to cope with her dad as he started taking a liking to alcohol. Things will not get better after her stepmother, Jane, steps into her life, along with her stepsister Anna, both of whom will make it their duty to turn Emma’s life into a living version of hell.

Even amidst her difficulties, Emma is not stripped of her keen sense of humor. Throughout the novel, she strives to please Will (her new “handler”) and cheer him up with a dose of her own effusiveness.

Will

Will is not your typically-fat and unfit billionaire. He’s handsome and quite slick, as well as a bit haughty (at times). He often displays an aura of self-sufficiency, but underneath, we see a man still fraught with weak spots and vulnerabilities that tend to manifest more acutely in his personal life than in his otherwise successful business life.

Other Characters:

Jane is Emmas stepmother. She essentially treats Emma as more of an asset than a family member and doesnt skimp on making her suffer, both physically and psychologically, while her husband indulges in seemingly endless drunkenness.

Anna is Janes daughter and Emmas stepsister. Shes just as cruel as her mother, especially towards Emma, whom she sees as almost ontologically inferior.

Matt is Emmas boyfriend (or, rather, soon-to-be ex-boyfriend). Hes everything a woman could ask for: Rich, handsome, and intelligent.

Vivian is Emmas roommate. She falls for Matt and seduces him in spite of the fact that she knows hes Emmas boyfriend.

Point of View

“The Billionaire’s Contract Pet” is told from the perspective of an unknown narrator who, while wholly aware of all the events that unfold, does not take part in any of them.

Plot

Emma learns that Jane, her “stepmother,” had sold her for $50,000 to a stinking rich (yet irremediably ugly) old man nearing his fifties. To make matters worse, her boyfriend Matt - arguably her only mental anchor up to that point - has been courting her roommate Vivian.

Desperate, Emma wanders the streets under heavy rain, a bit drunk yet determined to find anyone who could cheer her up on the worst day of her life. No car stops to give her a ride, so she just launches herself into oncoming traffic. Right at that moment, a luxury car approaches and almost hits her.

The owner, a billionaire named Will, quickly rebukes her. She asks him for a ride, but, thinking Emma is just an ordinary prostitute, he replies by saying he’s not in need of any “company.”

However, after seeing her collapse onto the asphalt, he feels sorry and takes her to a hotel so that she can clean herself up. Next, she has sex with him for money, but their relationship would hardly end there! She’d later proceed to sign a contract, basically making Will her owner for six months! (though she isn’t made aware of this until after the fact).

Hot Chapters

Chapters 3 and 4 are among the hottest chapters here and are pivotal in establishing the entire premise of the novel. Let’s briefly summarize them:

Chapter 3

Emma gets in a fight with Vivian over Matt, and the latter rebukes her, saying she should apologize, even though Vivian was the main instigator the whole time. This profoundly saddened Emma, who at that moment realized Matt was not the hero in her sad Cinderella tale.

During this same chapter, Emma meets Will just as she’s about to give up on life, though the first impression she gave wasn’t the best.

Chapter 4

Will takes her to a luxurious 5-star hotel and is initially not very interested in getting too intimate with her, only picking her up out of mere compassion, given her deplorable state. Meanwhile, Emma gets extremely nervous because she has never slept with a man before, let alone a man she just met.

During one specific moment, Will behaved as if he had just seen a ghost and turned from cold and apathetic to overemotional in an instant. Emma distinctly heard him whisper the name “Grace” during this swift transformation, but who exactly is this Grace woman he just mentioned? Perhaps a woman from his past?

Writing Style

The author (Laurie) doesn’t waste ink on superfluous metaphors and descriptions, nor does she resort to longwinded prologues or introductions. Her writing is direct and sharp, to the point where, at times, it could be construed as if coming from a teenager, though this works in the novel’s favor more often than not.

Final Thoughts

“The Billionaire’s Contract Pet” may not be the finest novel ever written. Many of the side characters can come off as a bit one-dimensional, and even the leads sound a bit cliché in some spots.

Nevertheless, Emma (the Female Lead) is one of those girls one can immediately empathize with, and readers are almost guaranteed to turn the pages so as to see whether she fares better after all the hardships she had to endure.

The novel as a whole is also fairly short and to the point, so you won’t be left with the impression that it overstayed its welcome, especially since the writing style is easy to digest and relate to.

In a nutshell, “The Billionaire’s Contract Pet” is completely worth your reading time, especially if you fancy CEO Romance novels!
