In the Kingdom of Valeris, magic determines status, power, and destiny. Eighteen year old Kevin Riven was born into one of the kingdom's most powerful noble families. But while his twin sister, Arena, is celebrated as a magical prodigy, Kevin has spent his entire life struggling to control his own power. On the day of their Codex Ceremony, Arena receives a rare four-point Codex, confirming her place among Valeris' greatest young mages. Kevin receives nothing. Humiliated and convinced that he has failed, Kevin refuses to give up. Then, at the edge of a river, when he is pushed to the brink of death, an impossible Codex appears. A five-point Codex. Black as night. Glowing crimson. No one understands where it came from—or why Kevin was chosen. Soon, Kevin discovers that his mysterious Codex is connected to an ancient guardian named Veyr, a strange black dragon who can communicate with him and teach him to control the power within. But possessing extraordinary magic does not make Kevin powerful. He must learn to control it. He must learn to fight. And most importantly, he must learn to believe in himself. When Kevin enters the Magical Knight Trial, he is still considered the weak Riven twin. While Arena attracts the attention of every Captain, Kevin struggles simply to prove that he belongs. But the five-point Codex is hiding secrets. Secrets connected to an ancient power that Valeris has forgotten. As Kevin's journey continues, he will discover that the world he thought he understood is far larger and far more dangerous than he ever imagined. Because sometimes the person everyone overlooks... is the person the world should have feared. The Kingdom of Valeris has chosen its next generation of heroes. But it may have accidentally awakened something much older.
