It’s ironic, you think you have a basic boring life: go to school, go on summer vacation, work, eat, sleep and repeat, and still people will find things to complain about saying they want more adventure, or something exciting to happen to them. Then suddenly, that exact thing happens to you. And you get dragged in to a war that’s been raging for hundreds of years. I’m only 17, I should be worrying about other things! Finishing school, what I want to do with my life, boys! But the day I meet Ash everything changed and I am yet to decided if they changed for the better. And it all started because of a nightmare. Who would have thought nightmares could be real. DEFINITELY NOT ME!…
View MoreAll I can think of is running, I can hear it coming behind me, giving chase like any predatory animal would do if they sensed easy prey. I know it’s catching me, the heavy footsteps following in my wake. I scan the wilderness looking for a way to escape this nightmare, but there’s nothing, no tree high enough, no branch long enough. My only hope is to keep running. Flashing back to seconds earlier, the look on my best friend’s face as the beast appeared from the shadows of the trees is all I can see. We were in the mountains camping for our summer vacation, enjoying our time away from school. When this summer ends, I will be going into senior year, getting ready for college and life ahead. Now everything has changed. Alexandria and I were just sitting on the logs that surround the flickering flames of the fire. We were roasting marshmallows and enjoying our freedom away from home. When it emerged. Alexandria saw it first.
At first it looked like a bear, but it was too big. Then it stepped out of the shadows allowing full view of its body. Its body a dark charcoal colour, with gigantic paws the size of small tyres. As it took a step forward, the claws that come out had to be at least 20cm long. Slowly I lifted my head to get a better look at its face, when suddenly it let out a blood curdling roar that blew Alexandria off her feet, and causes me to crumple to the ground. I looked up from my position and find that the beasts face represents a reptilian face, like the sort of thing teachers refer to as dinosaurs. Like the way they looked or would have looked like if they were still alive. Its darkness of its skin was like a night absent of the moon and stars, its eyes the only colour that can be seen on the hideous creature. The eyes were hypnotic. As the scarlet red eyes stare at me, I realise this is a creature I have never seen before. The amount of times I have come into the Aurelian Spires by myself searching for creatures like this I have never found one quite so frightening. This time I have no weapon, no way of protecting myself, let alone my friend. So I did the only thing I could do to protect her. I got up and ran. This is where I am now, running for my life hoping beyond hope that Alexandria packs up and leaves. Behind me I can hear her calling my name “Natalie, Nat can you hear me?” there’s a short pause before she says “I’m going for help, please be okay!” I continue running, I don’t know how long or how far I have ran, but I keep going. I can’t give up, not with my whole life ahead. Suddenly the moonlight guiding my path disappears and I am surrounded in darkness. With no knowledge of which way to go, I hit something hard and I black out. The next thing I know I wake up screaming in my bed, I shiver uncontrollably as the dried sweat makes my hair stick to my head. The sheets tangled at the foot of the bed, but my heart beat is already slowing because I’m at home safe and secure from any of those monsters out there in the woods. It was just a nightmare. In all the 17 years of my life, that would have to be the scariest nightmare I have ever had. I know I can’t go back to sleep after having a nightmare like that, so I get my phone out and check the time, its 2 in the morning I still have 5 hours until I have to get up. What am I going to do? I figure I could try calling Alexandria, she doesn’t like to sleep. So probably has a form of insomnia. After the first dial tone she picks up with a cheery “Good morning Nat, what’s happening?” I have no idea, how she can be wide-awake right now. She probably has her boyfriend over. His name is Aaron, the relationship name I have given them is the double As. In a nice voice I reply “Just had the scariest nightmare of my life. Why are you awake at 2 in the morning?” If I had of called anyone else, they would have ripped my head off for calling at such an ungodly hour. “Oh, you poor baby, its okay it was just a nightmare.” She purrs. There’s a short pause before she says “Aaron is over and we are watching horror movies, my parents are away for the week so they don’t know and Aaron’s parents think he’s at a friend’s house. Anyway must go, there is a movie waiting for me, and sleep waiting for you. Bye.” Well that was a bit abrupt, but I suppose it is 2 in the morning. “Okay, bye.” Then she hangs up and I’m left in my bedroom, alone. My eyes try to adjust to the darkness but my mind keeps thinking of the nightmare and I feel like something is watching me. I keep wondering if monsters like that are real, but I rule that out because it sounds so stupid. While I sit here in the darkness of my bedroom my heartbeat slows down and I am able to close my eyes without jumping at every noise I hear. I lay my head back against my soft feathery pillows and hope I will dream better dreams before morning or no dreams at all would be nice. As my breathing slows, my heart rate settles and my eyelids slowly droop as sleep draws be back into its embrace, the memory of the nightmare slowly disappears as well.By dark its only Ash and myself that remain. Lyrica has fallen asleep in my lap, her head resting in the crook of my neck. Ash sits beside me his arm resting on the lounge above me and the other rests in his lap holding my free hand. Alex and Cooper sit on the couch across from us, talking and laughing about things that had recently happened. By eight, Ash and I decide that we should get out of there hair. Alex seems slightly upset, but she understands. Slowly I climb of the lounge, Lyrica sleeping soundly in my arms. I take her up to her bedroom and lay her softly in her beautiful princess looking bed and tuck her in. Giving her a soft kiss on the head. I walk out of the room and back down to the guys at the front door. Cooper gives me a quick hug before going to turn all the lights off and making sure that the backyard isn’t completely destroyed. Alex throws her arms around me once more and whispers in my ear “Your going to be a great mum, and Ash will make a great dad. Don’t
I’m pulled from my thoughts from a feather light brush against my arm. Looking around I see Alex standing beside me her brows furrowed. “Is everything okay?” Her voice is like light pulling me out of the darkness of my own thoughts. “Yeah, everything okay. You’ve done a magnificent job with the house, when you first told me you were going to buy a house that you would have to renovate I thought I dear, hows she ever going to get the time to do that. But its come out beautifully.” Her eyes seem to twinkle with amusement as the words tumble out of my mouth. “Yeah I’m sure thats why you where staring of into the distances with no light in your eyes. Hows the nightmares going?” She smiles softly, its obvious that she knows me too well. “There getting better slowly, Ash is the same. But every night I wake up and try and move his arms tighten around. I think its his new fear, of losing me like he nearly lost me so many times all those years ago.” Her head bobs in understanding. Wh
Ash pulls up the car out the front of Alex’s new place. Cars seem to line the streets for there new house party. We struggle out of the car, after a ten hour trip both our legs are a bit wobbly. Everyone from the gang has been invited. Ash and I are a bit nervous about seeing most of them because we haven’t really talked to them since school finished. We had gone back to Riley’s boot camp after Blue told us about the missing monster, he had turned up about 10 years ago. He tried to attack Ash and I when we were at home, but these days nothing catches us unawares. We had heard rumours of something unnatural floating around the neighbourhood. So we had prepared ourselves. In the end we had to kill the monster and let Black know what had happened in case the monsters though that we were going to start another war. Walking up the front steps, Ash wraps an arm around me. I was nervous, these people were our friends and now twenty years after the battle. They were getting close to 40 year
Walking to the bathroom door I tap on it softly, “Cooper...” I sigh softly “Please Cooper, its me.” My voice is strained, I can’t loss another friend. The door opens slowly just enough for me to enter. Walking in I instantly find him and wrap my arms around him. “Are you going to leave me too? Is this why you've come looking for me?” “Oh, Cooper.” I sigh again. “We aren’t going to leave you, you are family. We have all lost someone, so we must create something new. A new family.” He sighs before burying his face in the crook of my neck and holding me tightly. “On the inside Alex really doesn’t want to leave you, but what she is doing, she thinks is going to make her future better. Enable her to go to college and get her degree. This is what she has always wanted, you have to understand that. She doesn't want to leave you, she’s practically been in tears since you stormed into the bathroom. She needs you just as much as you need her. So get your ass out of the bathroom and go t
The day passes quite quickly, school flying by as we see all our friends and I even welcome Josh with open arms. At lunch there seems to be a massive group of us, everyone from the battle sits with us. This seems to confuse the popular people that some of the gang use to hang with. Everyone seems to be recovering slowly, but steadily. The darkness that seemed to float around us seems to have disappeared and light and happiness is coming to the surface. Many of the groups parents where all fine, some seemed to have a bit of amnesia but other then that they were fine. All the pets are still at home and everyone seems to have overlooked the weird explosion of my house. I get a lot of sympathy from the staff and even some students come up to me and offer there condolences. Yes, now that everything has finished Ash and I have both been given time to grieve, grieve the deaths of our families and of our friends. But we are both trying to look at the bright side and believe that there sacrifi
The next morning after the party everyone seemed ready to move forward. After we had all cleaned the house, people started leaving. Riley and his gang were the first to go, having come the furtherest. They had quite a long drive back to there bootcamp training arena. As they drove away, we promised to stay in contact with them, and when that still didn’t encourage them. Riley had to sneak up to me and give me a kiss on the cheek. Ash’s face had been hilarious, and Riley and his group had fled. Practically running to the car, yelling there goodbyes. Ash had looked at me as if to say I told you he had a crush on you. But I just shrugged my shoulders and laughed at him. The rest of the group left in trickles, Josh and his group all hugged me and shook Ash’s hand. Most of them would see me at school next week. As the summer holidays were literally just coming to an end. Everyones families had come back safely from there holiday that they didn't even remember. Alex had been over there
