Dawn Ether
Everyone knows I've begged on my knees for three days just to become Tristan Shelby's mistress.
On the night I enter his estate, the man who once promised to marry me takes me to bed again and again, showing me no tenderness.
By dawn, my entire family is still thrown into prison.
Barely able to stand, I fall to my knees before him, my clothes in disarray.
"Tristan, my father never betrayed the crown, nor did he have your family executed. You promised me…"
He looks at me and pries my fingers off his sleeve, one by one.
"Give me a child," he orders. "For every child you give me, I'll spare one member of your family."
I spend six years as his prisoner and give birth to five children, but every single one dies. Desperate to save my family, I grit my teeth and force myself into his bed time and time again.
When I give birth to my fifth child, I fight to stay conscious. And at last, I discover the truth.
My babies never die of natural causes. The moment each one is born, the midwife carries them away and drains the blood from their hearts, killing them in the process.
I struggle to sit up, only to find myself face-to-face with Tristan.
"Rosalind needs the blood from an infant's heart to restore her health," he says, his expression impassive. "If your father hadn't destroyed my family, she wouldn't have been forced into a life in a brothel. She wouldn't be so frail now, either.
"This is what your family owes her."
I stare at him, suddenly remembering how he held my hands six years ago and promised to protect me for the rest of my life.
When I wake again, news of my family's execution and my child's death arrives.
Then a cold, mechanical voice echoes in my ears.
"Family Rescue Mission Failed. You will be forcibly removed from this world in three days."
