"Aria was just assisting me. Please, forgive her appearance." ​Assisting! ​I turned sharply toward Elena, expecting her to apologize and say that she had made a mistake, but the apology never came. ​The Grand Luna, the twins’ mother, softened instantly at the sight of Elena. "Elena, dear. Come here." She reached out, taking Elena’s hand. "I’ve heard the Council’s briefing. Two marked girls, a 'Void' ripple... a mess. But seeing you here gives me hope for this bloodline."

~Jane~ The bell rang. And just like that… everything slipped back into reality. Our world—soft, quiet, untouched—faded away. Time was up. Time to be apart again. And no matter how many times it happened… it never got easier. Our fingers stayed intertwined, neither of us ready to let go. Around us, students moved past, voices rising, footsteps echoing—but we didn’t move. We stayed there… holding onto the last fragile seconds. Nathan’s hand lifted slowly to my cheek, his touch warm, grounding.

"Let's take a picture together," she said enthusiastically. They all gathered together. Elena, Nina, and Jennie stood next to Ajeng, while Jack, Brad, Evan Bentley, and Nathan stood next to Evan.

“I’ll call it survival.” Lady Serephine Vale’s lips pressed into a line. The cold beneath her composure sharpened, as if she’d just realized Elowen wasn’t as breakable as she’d assumed. “And when the bonding begins,” Elowen added, softer now, aimed only at those who mattered, “you’ll hear whether Rowan can live with the truth.” Then Lady Serephine Vale’s attention shifted away from Elowen - toward the entrance, toward movement in the hall. A ripple of excitement moved through the crowd like a tide finding its shore.

Giving her a thumbs up. Karin sighs again breathing out through her mouth. "Ok, I'll do my best." She gets up, walks towards the mirror for one last appraisal, just then her mobile phone rings and she looks down at the caller ID. She gently picks the phone from the dressing table and answers on the second ring. "Hi, I'm good, and you? I'll be down in the next seven minutes, see you!" She looks at her sister through the mirror as she disconnects the call, a nervous look crosses her features.

The rejected one suffers for an entire year has to wait for the mark to fade before actively participating in another ball. I rooted in my spot at the top of the grand staircase as couples descended to the party around. Every year there are new faces from all over solely to find their mate. My eyes scanned the floor of nicely dressed bodies, trying to recognise a familiar face under all those gleaming smiles. Especially that face which haunted me at night. I could not find Alpha Axel anywhere. What if he went away already? It made curiosity and disappointment thrum deep in my gut.

She crawled out of bed and stared into the mirror watching her disorderly state. Perhaps if not for the fire drill that night, she would have made love with Jing Yue and this would have changed his perspective of her. The fire drill had caused them to scatter and run out of the room, forget about the party and assemble outside the building. They were divided after that and she never got to see what expression he had on his face before she left. And that way, two weeks had passed. There was no mention of Jing Yue since then.

It was the day of the coming-of-age ceremony. The ceremony had wrapped up, and the guests had trickled out when Iris finally strolled in, taking his sweet time with Ruby in tow. Ruby was walking awkwardly, and Iris had some pretty obvious scratch marks on his neck. Anyone with half a clue could have guessed what they had been up to. In the past, that would have made me lose my cool. One was a guy I had been crushing on forever, and the other was my half-sister.
