He moved like someone carrying explosives terrified he’d wake him, terrified of what he’d see in Zach’s eyes if he did.
Judgment? Worry? Disappointment?
Or worse… tenderness.
He couldn’t handle tenderness.
Not today.
Sudan stood and padded quietly to the desk, ignoring the throb in his ribs. Every movement pinched somewhere, his jaw, shoulder, hip but it was manageable.
Pain he understood. Pain made sense. It was the absence of it that rattled him.
He stared down at the notebooks scattered across Zach’s desk neat handwriting, color-coded tabs, half-finished essays. One open page had Sudan’s name written in the corner.
