He was right. Dope stories are slippery. This one wasn’t. Every time I looked at it, it looked back the same. A man with very light red hair and a scar closing his face like a comma. Blue eyes that went night-dark and then not eyes at all. Muscles ripping the wrong direction. The sound. Like every tree I ever tried to climb breaking at once.
“You okay, kid?” Mike asked quietly.
“I don’t know what okay looks like,” I said, and I hated how it felt like telling the truth.
