She couldn’t shake the feeling they were being watched. Midday brought them to a swollen river, its banks churned to mud by the night’s deluge. A rickety bridge swayed precariously over the rushing water, its ropes frayed and wooden slats cracked. “We have to cross,” Aria said, eyeing it warily. “There’s no other way through.” Caden tested the first plank, his weight making it groan. “It’ll hold,” he said, though doubt flickered in his eyes. “You go first with Rollan. I’ll follow.”

The only visible way across was a single, long, rather fragile-looking rope bridge. A large fort sat on the end of the bridge on our side. You had to go through the fort to access the bridge. And on the far side, a dark shape blocked off their end of the bridge. It was hard to make out clearly at such a long distance, but it was big. It didn’t look like a building, at least not a well constructed one. It was all uneven with bits sticking out at strange angles. And then it moved. It looked like it was scratching itself.

We came light and fast, exactly as ordered. I crouch at the edge of the treeline and study the crossing. The water was murky and churning, a reflection of the storm clouds above. Anna took a deep breath and began to cross the bridge. Each step felt like it took an eternity as the wooden boards creaked beneath her feet. The wind howled around her, and rain lashed at her face, making it hard to see.
