"I want to find out why my husband let this happen. I want to know if he was the one who handed me over. And I can't do that if I'm dead on a concrete floor." We sat in the dark for another hour, meticulously checking our makeshift lifeline. We had spent hours knotting together tattered fabrics, canvas curtains, and strips of heavy bedding. It was a grotesque, colorful umbilical cord that we hoped would lead to our rebirth. "Let's check the knots again," I said, my fingers flying over the fabric. Each knot was a prayer. I pulled at them with all the strength left in my sour muscles, feeling the tension of the fibers. "This canvas is strong. It’ll hold."

It didn’t fit with how well everything was going in my life. “Oh, what a tangled web we weave,” I whispered as I turned back around and tried to focus on work.

“How more can we be involved, Ari? We are mated, bonded to one another for life. Your life is tied to mine, and mine to you. How else can we be less involved?” “That’s exactly why I didn’t want us to be closer than needed!” I shout, exasperated. “I knew things would start to be complicated, and I tried to keep it all at bay, to try to not make the knot tighter or bigger because our lives are a mess as it is.” “You keep saying we are different, that we are messy, but please tell, how are we all of that if not the same?”

My hands worked frantically, tying it to the pillowcase, to the duvet cover, even the bed cover was pulled away too. My hands fumbling so badly that the fabric slipped through my shaking fingers. The knots came out uneven, loose, ugly. My vision blurred with tears, frustration clawing at my throat. It didn’t matter. It had to hold. I dragged the rope to the window, shoved it through the gap, and knotted it around the metal latch. My breath came in wild, shallow gasps. My heart pounded so hard I thought it would burst. I hoped the knot was tight enough.

"I'm sorry, Caitlyn. I had misunderstood you. I couldn't marry you in this life, but if there's a next life, I'll marry you as soon as I can." She rolled up her sleeve, revealing a new tattoo. It was a photo of us from when we were together. Through her tears, she said, "It's okay. I’ll never forget you. In the next life, I'll wait for you to marry me." Now free of attachments, I felt lighter. Slowly, I began to lose control over my form, and I realized my time in this world had come to an end. For the first time, I felt true peace. It was as if I was showing the living that death was not the end of life, but rather, the beginning of a new journey.

But each repetition felt thinner, fragile, a thread in a storm. She slid to the floor, curling into a fetal position. Her mind fractured further: flashes of herself as a child, a teenager, an adult, all overlapping, all screaming. A small, clear voice—hers, yet not hers—emerged from the chaos: “Breathe. Just breathe.”

Zendaya yelled in anger as she struggled to break free. He had hurt Jayden and all wanted to do was hurt him back but she couldn't as her hands were tied. “You can do so in your next life,” Anil said as he pointed the gun to Zendaya's head. “Goodbye Zendaya. I hope we can be more in our next life,” he said and Zendaya closed gsr eyes wait for him to pull the trigger. Bang! It went off.
