Day 22. It was just like I had predicted. I was back at the thrift store the next day. I shifted the weight of my tote bag from the right to the left hand as I pushed open the door to Tom's store with a determined sigh. After the series of crazy dreams I had last night, I had concluded that the only solution was to get my hands on that book. I had waited all day, impatiently at school and when school was finally over, I all but dashed here.

Tom paced back and forth in his room while Sarah was passed out after their lovemaking. He could tell she was worried about Alicia after discovering they used to be together as teenagers. He needed to put her negative thoughts to rest. Now, Tom paced because Alicia, who he knows to be intelligent and known for being the top student in Pharmacology, has turned up to this plague-ridden pack. Tom arrived at the Winter Howl pack a month earlier than Rowan with the help of his grandmother. He’d had a head start, yet he’d found nothing during his investigation.

Lila’s POV “TOMORROW,” Jacob said quietly. The word did not feel like a promise. It felt like a countdown. I stood in front of the tall mirror in my room, fingers pressed against the cool surface as if I needed something solid to keep me from drifting. Behind me, the estate stretched wide and silent, too quiet for a place that was about to host a wedding, a memorial, and a war all at once. Tomorrow. The word settled deep in my chest, heavy and unmoving.

Chapter Fourteen The next day, Tom woke up in a vast stone hall where each wall held a burning torch that pushed the darkness away, revealing a room both majestic and terrifying. Three figures sat before him on gold-plated chairs — a man, a woman, and a boy. The man wore a massive crown that gleamed under the firelight. Elders stood beside them, cloaked in thick robes, clutching books tightly against their chests. Their presence was solemn, almost holy, like ancient priests guarding forgotten secrets.

Everytime he had to leave, and there they’d be again: the ugly problems of a screwed up world, even more of them than there had been before. Like rabbits, they kept propagating, and all of a sudden, Tom would feel reminded of his aunt again who had killed herself, and of the drugs he used to sell. Of the jobs he had lost, his disappointed parents, and the relationships he had ruined. Until the present would strangle the past, and give birth to the future.
