The scarred man lunged suddenly—not at Caleb, but at the fire. He kicked at the burning wood, scattering embers across the stone. The cave plunged into flickering chaos, shadows leaping wild. Screams erupted. The boy sobbed, clutching Ava’s waist.
Ava dropped to her knees, frantically sweeping the embers back into the pit. Her hands burned, skin blistering, but she forced the fire back together. Sparks flared, light returning in a trembling glow.
