I stood on the city wall, watching the sun slowly rise in the distance. My parents, still full of energy, stood beside me. Dad patted my shoulder, saying with a grin, "Sweetie, how about we have a feast to celebrate tonight?"

"Say my name!" Tyler’s voice boomed like thunder through the duplex hallway, echoing down the stairs. His large, powerful palm was wrapped around my neck; it felt as though he might twist it until I died if I tried anything stupid. The skyscrapers that used to glow with the arrogance of the billionaire class were nothing but blackened skeletons silhouetted against a blood-red sky. The apocalypse hadn't been a sudden explosion. It had been a slow, freezing rot—a virus that turned the living into hollow, ravenous things, followed by a winter that never ended. And I was at the very center of the decay. "Is she dead yet?"

Stepping through the airlock door and onto the high catwalks, the air hit us instantly—thick, foul, and smelling of rust and raw copper. The sky above was a violent, bruised red, while plumes of thick gray smoke billowed up from the once-bustling city in the distance. Screams and car alarms echoed faintly across the valley, a haunting symphony to the apocalypse. I walked along the catwalk, my boots clicking firmly against the steel grating, and stood before the terrified, tense soldiers lining the edge.

The date was staring right at me, unblinking and I had to rub my eyes to be sure I wasn't hallucinating. It was indeed June 19th, 2665. The apocalypse happened July 19th. One month from today. I refused to believe that this was real. There was no way that I woke up one month before the city of Sloradath was reduced to ruins. But I knew everything that happened was too real to be a dream.
