“Coats are at the back. Socks are on the middle shelf. Do you have waterproof boots?” “No,” I said. She pointed at the back wall. “You’ll need those too. Let me know if you need any help.” “Thank you.” I made my way toward the back, not bothering to ask how she knew I needed all that because I knew it was glaringly obvious from the way I was shivering in my jeans and coat. I tried on four different coats before I found the right one; it was dark green with quilted lining and a fur-trimmed hood. The pockets were large and abundant, making it so I wouldn’t have to carry a bag every time I went out.

Ten minutes later, I stood before the full-length mirror in my study, adjusting the high collar of my tailored black coat. I didn't dress like a corporate CEO tonight. I dressed like the warlord I had been raised to be. The coat was cut from heavy, matte-black wool, lined with dark red silk, and reinforced at the shoulders with dragon-hide leather that resisted silver blades. A high, structured collar framed my jaw, contrasting sharply with the silver-grey hair I had combed back tightly from my face. I wore tailored dark trousers, heavy leather riding boots that clicked loudly against the hardwood floor, and a single silver signet ring—the seal of the Eastern Line—on my right thumb.

“Get dressed on your best royal coat. The one with the crystals. Now.” I nodded. I did not ask why, there was no time to. I ran. My room was cold. The fire had gone out hours ago and no one had come to light it. I threw my bag down and pulled out a deep red velvet coat from the locked chest. It was stitched with black thread and tiny crystals that caught the light like blood on snow. It was made for ceremonies. For showing power. For pretending I belonged. I had never worn it. I dressed fast. My hands were shaking. The heat under my skin was worse today. The paste was burning again and I could feel it under the fabric, like tiny needles dragging across my stomach.

December 25th, 2012 Evening Damon “Would you like my coat?” I can see my breath as I talk, swirling towards her face, copper escaping from beneath a hirsute wool fiddler cap. Around my neck, I had a forest green cravat cleanly fastened and adorned it with an emerald brooch that had the emblem of the academy on it. The phoenix and the dragon were on the upper half, and the lion and the wolf were on the lower half. From one lapel of the coat to the other, a couple of amethyst chains hung, securing the cravat from flattering.

" Look at it,is it too thin?" I asked him feeling the coat material.

Her iPad lay in her lap, the screen still showing the headline of an article about that French actress and the twenty-nine-year-old chef, but Salma was far more interested in my new package of suffering. Poppy opened the ribbon with Sebastian’s help. Inside was a small coat. Navy. Too beautiful. Light wool, clean tailoring, two rows of small gold buttons, a white collar, and a tiny anchor emblem on one side of the chest. Not a cheap costume. Of course not. This was something that had probably been made by someone who knew the measurements of a four-year-old and had no fear of price tags. She was smiling sweetly at me as a tear burned in my eye. I made myself tear off the wrapping, grinning widely as I pulled out a beautiful new winter coat. It was black, with a faux-fur lined hood, and an attached belt that cinched it at the waist. So many coats I'd tried had looked odd because of my height, but as I held it up I knew this one would be long enough.

She looks it over for a second, but there isn't a single hair out of place so she steps back. "You look beautiful," she says and I look at myself in the mirror. The royal blue color is deep and makes my alabaster skin stand out. The skirt is full and comes in at the waist. It was a lace top with off the shoulder long sleeves that highlight my neck and collar bones beautifully. My hair is in an elegant bun at the base of my head and my makeup is perfect. All in all, I have no complaints about my appearance. Liamee and the other Keas that helped her did a wonderful job.

Then, a black silk shirt that was embroidered with black thread. All that, though, went under the coat. The coat was the “dress” part. It looked like a suit jacket on top, with three buttons cinching it in before the entire coat flared out. It even had a built in black petticoat under it and would look far more like a dress. The front color was black with white embroidery that matched the embroidery on the shirt. It was over the top. All of it was over the top. “Come on, I’m going to do a lovely smokey eye and a dark lip. You are going to look incredible! No one is going to be able to keep their eyes off you.”
