A single door at the back sat under a humming red 'EXIT' sign.
Jake pointed to the exam table. "Perch."
Lina sat, still clutching her stomach.
Jake flicked a penlight, the beam dancing across her pupils. "Talk to me. Where does it hurt?"
"Lower right," Lina gasped. "It’s sharp. Like a hot wire."
Jake pressed his fingers into her abdomen. Lina winced on cue, a perfect performance.
"Could be a ruptured appendix," Jake said, glancing at the armed shadows in the doorway. "I need an ultrasound and a blood draw. You boys can haunt the hallway."
